Listening with interest on the CB from my area of South Dorset I can hear operators from Scotland, Wales etc and from abroad like Spain Southern France when the skip is right. Using my legal 4W CB trying making contact with anyone is virtually non existent. However, after listening to others making contact on the air it seems you have to be using a rig pushing out 20W or more to get anywhere so it appears using anything legal is a no go. I am interested to know what other people use and does using a rig that's not strictly legal bother them (or have they been bothered by police etc)? I am thinking of getting an SSB CB Radio but want to make the right choice. A CRT 6900n is very tempting at the moment so thoughts please.

Hi. Nigel.

We have spoke several times on the FM nets. It all depends what you want out off the Hobby. Do you want
Long Distance Contacts i.e. Europe/USA/The World then you'll need SSB with a Rig capable of 50w+. Also
it depends on your QTH['Home]. Will you be homebase or Mobile/Portable. IF Homebase you could Get S5-7
of noise from IT/WIFI/ SKYBOXES etc. I do! I cant Work Legal FM or anything above T5[27.555]. I have to
go mobile uponthill. Also it depend's on finances. You need to get the best Aerial you can afford. A lot of the
Op's use T2lt's you can get them off Ebay. Personally I use Ham gear it's expensive But it does the job. I use
other band's down into the HF. p.s. You have plenty of time the next 11cycle starts in 2/3yrs time after that
you'll be able to work the world on 12/15 w. like I did in '62/65 & '75/77 & '84/86. Pm me if you need any
help I live 15m. N. of Yeovil. Good Luck 73s Mike.

Hi Nigel.....If you can find some high ground (the higher the better) in your area you'll be amazed how far you can get on just 4 watts, especially if you go portable with a decent sized antenna. Even with a mobile 1/4 wave you will get much further than you will from home. A friend and I once took a 1/2 wave Silver Rod antenna to the summit of Helvellyn, Cumbria, which is 950 metres / 3117 feet a.s.l. and we were being heard as far away as Devon which is approx. 250 miles and that was using just 4 watts in FM mode. SSB radios will have more power and range and although some of them ("export" types) are not strictly legal they are used by many people both from this forum and worldwide. As long as you don't cause interference to anyone it's extremely unlikely that you'll be bothered by the authorities.

Hi Mike and Phil,

Thank you both for your replies.

Mike - I am going towards long distant contacts so an SSB Rig will be a necessary purchase. I have a Homebase Setup and don't suffer the noise from Wifi etc like you do - so you have my sympathies! I'm using a Thunderpole T800 giving out a measured full 4W into a Sirio GPS mounted on the roof of my house. With Coax losses the Sirio is getting 3.7W. With this setup I can hear a lot of European Operators especially on the CEPT frequencies. I think part of my problem is being swamped out by other operators using more than 4W. I realised this when I heard a 14 Oscar Mike coming from the France / Spain border and tried to contact him and couldn't understand why I was getting nowhere but somebody from Slough was. Later that evening the Oscar Mike contact admitted he was outputting 70W, making my 4W contact futile to say the least! When I do get the SSB Rig I'll use that for my Base setup, keeping the Thunderpole for mobile use, possibly going to my old haunt on top of Hardy's Monument.

Phil - Thanks for your input, I had a feeling that if you don't bother anybody else with interference, the authorities probably wont bother you. It's nice to have that confirmed by somebody else so again thank you. I haven't heard of anybody being prosecuted by the authorities or neighbours for that matter.

Regards,

Nigel
