Yaesu FT-980; Not transmitting - I think...

Ok so this is how I feel :bash: :headbang: Let me explain why...

So I passed my foundation over a year ago and finally decided I wanted to dip my toes into HF. Already got VHF/UHF plus D-star and DMR so wanted to do some HF.

I purchased a HF rig (Yaesu FT-980) on eBay for about 200) give or take. Went to collect as the thing weighs 17 KG so not going to be post friendly and wasn't too far from me anyhow. Gets there and the guy is really nice and his workshop was amazing. He also hosts the local radio club so had all the kit you could ask for. He shows me the radio working and it was receiving ok too. Took it home and plugged it all in and decided right there are so many knobs and buttons I really need to read the manual to ensure I use it correctly and that I didn't cause interference on amateur bands.

Anyway after reading the manual i decided to try and make a contact. Stick the antenna up and plug it in etc, test the SWR and its perfect 1:1. I went through the operating instruction slowly one by one and try for all I might I cannot get the thing to transmit. There is so many knobs and buttons I'm convinced its me and not the radio but I am concerned I have been sold a dud. I don't have the equipment or the know how to test the thing.

The reason I think it is not transmitting is because there is no output on the power gauge and my external SWR / power meter also not registering anything either. Have tried for hours calling CQ but no response. Is any one familiar with this radio which might be able to point me in the right direction?

Thanks in Advanced

Hi Ashley, if you have seen it working then it must be ok as Tony said have a chat with the seller. I have found this for you if you didn't get one with the radio http://www.radiomanual.info/schemi/FT980_user.pdf

I gather it did work fine as you managed to check the swr on the antenna you connected to the radio. Some HF radios which are not for the 11m band have a general coverage setting which disables TX
If the radio has been wide banded then It just may be that you have set the radio to general coverage mode (RX only). Failing that Id also recommend contacting the seller for advice.
Sounds more like you may have knocked a setting off.

Best Regards keep us posted.

Thanks guys, I thought I would try here before contacting him. I already have the manual and the technical supplement but thanks anyway. I'm pretty sure its a setting somewhere but there is so many knobs and buttons I'm not sure. The radio does have two VFO's one for receive only under the gen button and the other allows transmission on the ham bands under than ham button. I did make sure this was selected as this was part of the process when going through the manual. I'm going to have a play tonight and see if I can work it out if not I will give the guy a ring tomorrow.

I was able to test the SWR so it must be transmitting. Just not showing that it is.
