i made a few, a cw decoder was one but you could build one of those little pixie kit radio things.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RADIO-40M-CW-Shortwave-Transmitter-QRP-Pixie-Kit-Receiver-7-023-7-026MHz-DIY-UK-/132032577382?hash=item1ebdc13f66:g:hmIAAOSwImRYTwjZ

easy enough as parts all printed on board and you get a parts list, is a bit small and lot of soldering.

You are lucky you can find a club that is interested in doing it.

I'm having a real up hill battle, locally I've been to a couple of clubs that have shown little if no interest in helping me along the way. I've also emailed another local club at least half a dozen times with no reply and yes they are active!

I've bought the intermediate book and exam secrets book from the RSGB and I'm reading through them at the moment. The difficulty comes when you have questions or wonder if you have understood something correctly.

On the practical side I'm going to have to find somewhere that will observe the kit building and let me sit the exam. It looks like this will not be local despite being surrounded by clubs.

I'm finding the process very frustrating!

I was under the impression that the intermediate project did not have to be observed during construction, and the choice of project undertaken was not set in stone and at the tutors/instructors discretion? The intermediate book contains suggestions of possible kits to use, but there are many radio projects that could be used outwith these for the course. If the instructor agrees, you could even fabricate an antenna and this maybe accepted ?
In my case the tutor said the guidelines required the project to reflect the competance level required for the intermediate cirriculum, and should contain an element of soldering which would demonstrate efficiency. For my intermediate I presented several homemade baluns and calculations/results spreadsheets and this was accepted.

Hope this helps.

Ian, If you are still struggling for somewhere to help you out, I may have several intermediate test exam sheets I could look out and send you. I know they wont substitute having a proper instructor but better than nothing?
