Hi folks, sitting here looking at 11m band scanning around - not a peep out of it all night. I'm at around 1,500 ft elevation but only have a loft mounted whip with a solid ground plane.

I started back in the eighties with CB as a teenager and then my working life turned to becoming an HF radio engineer and radio officer, I've formerly held an unrestricted ham licence for Antarctica where I had a plethora of kit available to me and managed QSLs from all over the globe... I have a GOC radio licence for maritime but only use radios in a limited sense for the past 20 years.

Meanwhile.... back to my Alinco DR-135 I'm clueless - not a peep?? Where should I start AM USB / LSB? Bands to listen out on? You advice and contact would be very welcome.

Thanks in advance.

It seems that the whole of the 11m band has died for some reason (conditions are bad if fact none exists on that band ) its like it all over , apart from a few pre-arainged networks which are posted on here on the site, but as for any old skool DXin and even just normal local chitchat it's just dead, looks like CB radio has finally died a death

In fairness Cozzmik, I would be grateful just to hear a voice down the road...

Is there somewhere where I can find channels, modes, schedules used by groups in my area?

You are are in a great location for the UK networks. Last year I stayed near Okehampton and set up portable on a hill above the military base, and manged to call into the midweek net in the north west, right up the the Peak District, up the Sheffield - 209 miles
Look at the 'event' page for details when the networks are running.

However, you are going to be severely limited by the indoor antenna., With weak signals being the order of the day, you really need to get something up outside, even if its just a simple vertical dipole like a Antron 99. It will far out perform what you have in the loft..

Failing that when you get to June, Sporadic e propagation means that 11 metres will burst into life for a few months with the whole of Europe workable.

But just thought, can you not renew you licence for ham?
1500ft asl on Dartmoor with a simple wire antenna even with 10 watt on 40 metres would be very good fun.

In fairness, I connected this whip because it's what I had to hand... I shall stick up a vertical dipole as soon as I can lay my hands on one and have time to get up a ladder.

I was a radio officer on an Antarctic base for three years, the VP8 callsign was given to me at the cost of a tenner so that I could play on the ham bands .... I don't think it would have any standing today ..... I've been trying to dig out my old QSL cards but alas I think I cleared them out a couple of years ago.

As I said you would only know what networks are going on by looking on the forum here mate, as for what in your area it's a bit hit or miss TBH because who knows if there are any in your area, the only way you will find out is to keep a eye on the forum info

i live in the top end of cornwall ( north ) and just bought myself a CB rig i too have heard nothing ive been to routor to see if i can get anything but nothing at all after two hours, been to davidstow moor aswell with a 11m fishing pole, and still nothing, although i heard a couple of farmers talking work down in penzance. i am not sure if this is already in the process (but quote me if im wrong ) i think we should get groups of divisions ie clubs in area's and just simply spread the word BRING BACK CB to get more back on. well thats what i think anyway ive spoken to loads of people on social media and they say oh wow i remember cb ive still got mine i just tell them to turn it all back on and to be honest they are thinking of going to give it another go.

That sounds good to me, mate. I don't really know my way around this forum, would you be able to set up a CQ Devon and Cornwall thread in the right section?

Incidentally, I'm at the highest village in Devon and I still hear bu993r all...

Dave was saying what country's he was hearing but using the division number code for each country, if you look at the top of the forum main page you will see a box/link sayin 11m division numbers each country has a number code for DXing
hence as in my call sign is 26CT 050 which 26= England CT=the obvious 050 = my club number

Hello and welcome to the forum, Shamus.

Sid's Sunday Net will be on Ch34 on the UK40 this afternoon (frequency 27.93125 FM), might be worth a try to see if you can work some stations. Usually runs between 2 and 4pm.

Frequency 27.555 usb (Ch12 high-band) is the 11m band international calling-frequency, often called T5. Just to make you aware that this frequency is still illegal to use in the UK.

If you look at the top of the forum, you will see the 11m band-plan and call-sign codes. The band-plan highlights the calling-frequencies and modes. It also shows the legal and illegal frequencies you can operate on.

Hi Shamus,
Welcome to CT DX group.
I think 11m is just at a low point, due to the solar cycle dip. There are plenty of nets however, and plenty of portable operators who post on the forum letting other members know when they are out on high ground, so don't give up !
11m is still quite an amazing band when the sunspot activity is at a peak, it's just sad that we are nearing a lull/dip at the moment for DX.
