Hello Everyone,

I live in a flat in Brighton, and am very limited antenna-wise. I have an Alinco DR135-DX and tried hanging a quarter-wave length of wire out of the window, which produced mediocre results. I then covered the whole window sill with aluminium foil as a ground plane, and set a 5/8th loaded whip at an angle across the window which was a slight improvement, and I managed to contact a station near Arundel about 15 miles away. Most of the time I hear no stations at all, aside from occasional outbursts from inadequate types who get off on being nasty or weird.

I am now building a magnetic loop antenna out of 22mm copper pipe which is very compact at 27 MHz, a rectangle 500mm x 500mm tuned by a 30 pF butterfly variable. Magnetic loops are not dependent on the existence of a ground, and I am expecting great things from it when the sky waves start to come in.

When I have the loop up and running I hope I'll be able to get into your - our - SSB net, as the Alinco set does 16W PEP which should have a fair reach under good conditions.

Finally, I am also a multi Beofeng person!

Thank you all so much for your kind welcomes.

I was pleased as punch to see lots of good things said on the forum about the Alinco DR-135 DX set which is my main sender because it has W/T. I run it off a simple PSU I based around an inexpensive 12V 10A SMPS sold on ebay for powering LED strings. The SMPS has a tiny volts adjust pot on it, and I turned this up to deliver 13.8V, and there you go. I put a mains RFI filter in front of it, and some ferrite chokes and bypass caps after it, and a couple of automotive blade fuses in a holder to be on the safe side, and it all goes very well.

The Alinco and SS9900 menus are about as far as I seem to be able to get with software driven stuff. A consequence of my latest exchange with Lord Beofeng, the inscrutable genie inside my GT-3TP Mk III, is that he has - claiming to be acting on my command - become a hundred times more inscrutable by talking only in Cantonese. I have not been able to find out how to put this reverse into reverse. I am a person who thinks that a transmitter is something that has an 807 in it.

Glad to be here!

Andy, I went for a jaunt on the Grand Union Canal with a pal last summer, and there's nothing like watching the scenery glide by with a mug of tea in one hand and a bacon sandwich in the other. Next summer we're planning to sail from London to Lancaster in her Norton Canes narrowboat.
