I was looking at Amazon a few days ago and noticed quiet a few sub £100 DMR radio's.
This has made me curious about digital Ham radio.
I know there are several competing standards such as C4FM, D star and DMR.
It looks like the flavour for the month could be DMR.

So far I have looked at these models
TYT Tytera MD-380 DMR 5 Watt
Tytera TYT MD-390 DMR 5 Watt
Retevis RT3 DMR Portable Radio Digital Mobile Radio Mototurbo Tier 3 (5 Watt)
Radioddity GD-55 10-Watt High Power IP67 Waterproof DMR

I know not to touch the Baofeng as it does not fully support tier2!
I know the Tytera models work.
I think the Retevis should work.
As for the Radioddity I believe that it will not work.

Can anybody comment on these radios for Ham use?
I would be grateful for any advice.

DMR is really becoming very popular due to cheap, yet quite decent radios becoming available.

The Retevis and TYT/Tytera radios are all the same, just a different logo on the outside. The MD-390 is meant to be waterproof.

I bought the Retevis RT3 this time last year and can confirm it's the same as the TYT MD-380. Radio works well once you get your head around the DMR system and programing.. There is a lot of support available from various sites and social media groups to help you.. I would have to say from an pure audio quality point of view I think full width C4FM sounds the most natural over DRM or D-Star systems..

Just a quick update.
I bought a TYT MD 390 from Amazon.
So far I have only had it 2 days.

After guessing the corect file on the CD to run, finding a code-plug and a repeater that is in range, I am on the air :)

So far I have heared lots of local conersations and some in the USA. At one point I heard someone on an island somwhere.
Using Pheonix network.

Now I am looking into code_plugs in more detail and wil try to edit the one I have.

It takes a bit of gettng used too!
