Just for information, when Ofcom introduced their new portal system as discussed in another post by Delboy (Click for LINK), they took the ability for us to pick our own call signs. I did a search for the list of available call signs looking to see what was available and found a freedom of information request stating the new system does not allow the call sign to be picked, it will simply be allocated. Click for LINK This is the link for the request. Its handy to know for anyone doing their foundation or looking to do it. :thumb:

Having gone through the process of getting my call sign this morning I am somewhat confused. The FOI request clearly says you can no longer pick your call sign, but when applying for the licence you have two options. The first is to have the first available call sign and the second is a checker which you can put the call sign you want in and see if its available. I tried a couple that I would want but they said its not available. So tried a few before and after the call sign my friend Richard was issued about 10 minutes before I applied for mine. I tried a number of different ones including the call sign I was eventually issued with, all said unavailable. I eventually gave up and went with the next available one which gave me M6IGG, on of the ones I was just told was unavailable.

Does this apply to all levels or just an initial foundation licence?

Hope so too as I'm hoping to be through the Intermediate before the end of this month and will be booking the Full exam as soon as it is out of the way- subject to passing of course!

Last thing I would want to end up with is a suffix like qxz or qqx or the like. :o :D

I believe you can still pick but it's tedious as you don't know which call signs are free.

To help there is a database available of all call signs issued as as Sept 20, 2016. Any call in the database will not be available, using it may improve your chances of finding a good unallocated call sign:

a lot of people think the call signs are taken when they try for them. i couldnt seem to get any until i realized you dont put in the 2e bit or the e bit something like that then after hours of trying i got one of the ones i was after.

OFCOM online licensing systems have always been <polite mode on> "cranky". Congrats to all on the licences!

As far as i'm aware there is a function to select your own callsigns, but i tried multiple including the one i ended up with and none of them said they were available. I just let the "algorithm" pick for me!

If I remember correctly it was the same for me with my foundation call. I had to omit the secondary part and enter M6PHG rather than MM6PHG.

M6 can no longer chose their own call sign and are given the next one availabe on list as their running out ( although how it makes a difference to the number available is beyond me ) and they may start reissueing M6 callsigns that havent been validated..or so I was told today

Apparently it is possible, it's just that there aren't that many left.

Recent m6 passes got IQx calls, but one managed to get YHW (or similar)

The information given to me , about the Intermediate level was incorrect or hasn't yet been implemented as I just choose mine , no problem.
