Just toying with an idea and would be interested to hear people's thoughts on it. I want to add a direction finding ability to my CB set up for greenlaning. I dont want a huge Yagi antenna and for transmitting will have a properly SWR omni antenna on the roof with proper ground plane. What I was also considering was getting a short omni antenna and placing it inside a metal pipe. The metal pipe will have a slit to one entire side removed from it depending on people's thoughts. When the slit is pointed in a certain direction it should receive radio waves from that direction. The narrower the slit the more accurate the directional ability. Signals coming from other directions will be blocked by the pipe which acts sort of like a faraday cage. I could either use a handheld CB and a power meter or an antenna switch and wire to reach outside the vehicle from the mobile unit. Would any of this work? It would not be used to transmit and doesn't need to pick up mega range it is more the direction of transmission. I am also not expecting precise bearings but a general direction as a guide. I like the idea of possibly having two CBs so I can hear on the omni when they are transmitting and endeavour to find the bearing using the other radio and sweeping. I have a few friends and we are tempted to try a little CB fox hunt. I know about Yagis and removing antennas when close etc so if feedback could relate to the above that would be really helpful. |
