Charlie Tango DX is a group dedicated to Hobby Radio Users in all forms, whether CB, Amateur, PMR446, Scanning and Short Wave Listening.
We are a very active and friendly group that welcomes anyone from anywhere in the world who has an interest in Radio, regardless of their level of experience, their equipment, their location, or their radio preference. We have members varying from fully qualified operators on the Amateur Bands, to newcomers who have just bought a PMR446 set, and many CBers both old and new. All are equal on the Site.

The CT Site contains many reviews, tips and modifications within the forums, and we take pride that no sensible question is ever left unanswered, and nobody is ever belittled or mocked for asking an honest question, no matter how simple it may seem. We were all new to the hobby once.

So here i am, thinking about going back on air, so thought id join a CB forum first.

I got caught up in CB fever back in the very early 80s, stuck with it for a good few years but then drifted away.

One drunken night a few years back saw me win an auction for a cb radio on ebay.
Is there even anyone still on ? I havnt a clue.

So here I am

Hi Col,
Welcome to CT DX group.
I think the answer to your question is : it depends where you live :)
In some area's there is quite a lot of activity still (not as much as the 'glory days of CB' but still plenty on CH19 etc), where-as in other area's it seems to be almost dead.
That is for local chinwagging of course, but if you are talking DX-ing, then there is still a LOT of operators on both the old freeband section of 11m (27.555 and around), and also on the old 'midband which is now legal to use on all modes (FM/AM/LSB/USB).
There are quite a few DX groups (like us) on the go, so there are plenty of 'nets' during the week & weekends, where operators get themselves into a good location high up, and can usually log plenty of contacts during a few hours. I think in your area there are quite a few on, so I would be surprised if you did not hear some locals. The solar cycle is on it's way down, and the propagation not quite as good as it was 2-3 years ago, but still there are plenty to be heard on the 11m band most days.
Quite a lot of CB'ers have opted to take their amateur radio exams, which provides you with a few more options for when 11m is not very active, and there is still a lot of activity on all ham bands.

I have issued you the call-sign : 26CT2264, good luck,
Nik

Hi Col,

Welcome to CT.

T.
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone and thanks admin for assigning me the call sign 26CT2264.

Cant have spoken to you unfortunately Ranger, as I have no antenna to my name.

I have given some thought about taking my amateur radio exam,, but then i can see if i passed the whole hobby would escalate pretty rapidly, much like any other hobby :)

SWMBO would be against the roof of our house bristling with antennas.

I did live in east London up until 2013 and had an antron 99 on a pole on my chimney stack, I lived on the top of a hill and did get exceptional reception and gave out a good signal too.
The london CB scene was alive and well, and I got back into it in no time.
But i just cant see it being the same in Ipswich \ suffolk.

Maybe amateur radio is the way forward for me if i want to pursue it.

just seems a shame my mint magnum S9 is boxed up and in the loft

Hello Col,
During the summer sporadic E season I speak to quite a few ops from the S.East of England on both FM & SSB.

There seems to be a few more ops in Norfolk than in Suffolk, at least that is what I've found, so fingers crossed that we will have some decent short propagation during the summer of 2017, and who knows we might even get to make a contact.

I always enjoy speaking to the "Tractor Boys" from Suffolk, as it brings back happy memories to me because in the distant past I spent many happy days there via Ipswich Town FC.

Welcome back to radio and good luck for the future.
