I wonder if anyone can help. I'm considerering purchasing a new CB with the new side bands on it but was wondering whether this will actually give me the ability to talk new people. On my current radio (a car based midland 42) picking up any traffic in my location is rare. I've been led to believe the side bands will give me a longer range and a more 'radio minded' user as compared to the more myopic breaker that only talks to one or two of his contemporaries and has no interest in coping new breakers. Don't really now much about this new style of radio so please, all information would very greatfull. Thank you in advance.

Yes , sideband mainly upper sideband will give you a slight increase in range and yes generally speaking a different type of operating style , no breakers , 10_4 etc, It would depend on what you want if dx then propergation is everything , if local groundwave then a low noise level and decent antenna are a priorty, SSB in itself isnt a magic door opener to new contacts.

That sounds cool. So what is the etiquette regarding conversation in its most simplistic form. How do you learn or do you listen in and learn that way. Fundamentally do you think there will be more traffic with the side bands as its practically none existent under the Fm U.K. 40.

Dangerous Dave, nothing wrong with adding SSB to your armoury, given the right conditions SSB can travel 1000s of miles or hug the ground and go over the horizon and beyond.

Keep trying with FM as well, I have recently been talking to Munich in Germany and Stockholm on the UK FM channels. 600 and 900 miles respectively.

Wow that's really cool. I clearly have a lot to learn. Anywhere on the net you can point me where they translate the basics on how I could maximise my current gear. I really am not that knowledgeable yet but keen to learn.

Range wise , Ive worked 150miles on FM before now and loads out there regulary do greater distances , for dx Ive worked Canada on fm so if the propergation is there fm/am/ssb you will make the trip. As for conversation , just every day language, read the dx code of conduct and brush up on some Q codes and have a listen and you,ll be good to go.
Have fun and dont ruin the fun of others and you'll be fine

@ Dave :

SSB is generally a bit more 'serious' than UKFM, and usually there is a lot more chance of contacting overseas.

It isn't that different to FM, although it is a lot quieter (less background hiss) and generally you will find more operators on, who are willing to make contact (there are some idiots on still, but generally a lot less than UKFM in my experience).

FM can still be good for DX, but the most important thing of all is your antenna. It doesn't matter really what mode you use, or even radio to a certain extent, your success in DX-ing is mainly down to your antenna system and the propagation conditions (with a bit of luck thrown in).

This is great stuff guys. Thanks for all the advice. Now for some research and reading and hopefully some serious dxing. :RTFM:

Just make the most of what you got, you can but don't need to spend a fortune. Good coax is a good start, good low loss coax and good connections can make up for a smaller antenna or low antenna height, saying that if you can get the antenna out and up in the open, above roof height the better it will perform, saying that one mounted on the ground can be used for good Dx as the signal reflects upwards from the ground being close.
Tune your antenna, get a low SWR, this will help improve the power going out of the antenna into the sky. (Less gets reflected back).
Conditions vary, try using the radio at different times of the day, you may be surprised what you pick up.
Mainly just enjoy the hobby.
Good luck.
Steve

PS Dave I have just seen your location, about 10 miles from me, also there is a Tim on here further along at Chichester, listen out for us. Plus most nights a very active net on Channel 38 runs from 8pm, covers the whole area, you should hear it ok, plus guys get up on Portsdown Hill, they should be clear to, listen out for the gravelly voice of Terry 2, he transmits from that way.
All the best
Steve

Hi Dave

There are many 'mid week nets' which operate around the country on SSB and plenty of long distance stuff when conditions are right so definitely worth giving it a go.

The choice of radio will depend on if you want to stay legal.

If you do, the most popular radios are probably the President Grant 2 and the Albrecht ae5890eu.

Legal radios will obviously keep you right in the eyes of the law but most operators are quite happy to use illegal radios which have higher power output and more channels. In my opinion one of the best performing and good value radios is the Anytone 5555(Or variants) which has good power output and can cover lots of channels.

Regardless of what u decide, CB radio is very quiet these days and you may find that days/weeks can go by with little activity but having ssb will certainly improve your chances of finding someone to talk to.

My advice is get mobile and up a hill. You will hear much more and get out more that way.

Some really good information from your thread. I have never really understood the whole Side Band thing until now so thank you. Still don't understand why you don't get a SWR reading though :-)

Because Ssb doesn't produce a constant carrier signal under. Normal operating modes only am or FM or cw if a constant tone is produced.

Ah, OK. Doesn't register either on the power meter (old external thing built in with SWR meter). Can these signals be amplified? If it were legal of course ;-) Or in other words how do you know your output if you can't measure it?

You can whistle into the mic on ssb to give a basic power output reading. Not the most technically sophisticated way of measurement, but does the jobbie :)

And yes you can amplify your output power whether its FM, AM or SSB even though it's illegal on the cb to do so. If you are going to do it, best not to stuck too much power into the amp. Many amplifiers have a power level control which reduces the power to the input. By doing this you reduce the effects of splutter, harmonic and other undue interference to other radio users :)

Ahhhh, so now i know why people whistle into their radios! I always thought it was folks messing about! This thread has been great for some real good solid basic info.

It can be folks messing about as well ;) With a quick whistle on SSB (and useful on AM) you can quickly tell what's happening with your transmitter. A few whistles can also alert people that there's someone out there especially handy for DX. Bit like a poor man's beacon, lol :D
