Hey CT,

I'm getting my first CB soon (Midland Alan 42 Multi with some extra gadgets) and I was wondering if anyone uses the EU frequencies for DX'ing? I know many people use freeband like .555, but I want to stay legal (And the 42 doesn't do .555!) I wish to DX on the EU frequencies but I'm not sure if anyone uses them when skip is good? Does anyone use them? 73s!

Yes when conditions are good there are lots of stations dx-ing on the EU band. Channel 31 is the main FM calling channel.

I find it's full of German stations. That's it. Germans talking German to Germans.

I've got an a midland alan 42 multi, and I use it with a car kit (mag mount antenna etc) and have never heard anything on the EU frequencies, other than a solitary foreign trucker. I've pulled in a few european stations (listen only) on the UK frequencies, but only when high up (1000ft asl). It may be that if you connect it to a proper base antenna you'll get better results, but even using just the car kit I've had conversations 50 + miles away, though again, that's from high ground to high ground. And if you go hand held, don't even think about using the piddling little rubber duck that it comes supplied with. It's hopeless. Get a longer whip antenna. It increases your range wonderfully! Happy hunting!

Thanks Ken!

I was not hopeful for the stock 7" rubber duck that comes supplied with the unit. I'm probably going to end up getting a 20" rubber duck. And at the end of the day, as long as I get some contacts in, I don't mind! 73s!

If you are staying legal one thing you might find frustrating is that the unit will cheerfully pull in (high power) stations but you probably won't be able to reply to them unless you are on very high ground with a good antenna on your car, or a base antenna with the full guy rope kit etc. (I haven't gone that far yet!) also there is no side band which is a bit limiting for DXing. That's my next move; getting a home base with a stonking great big sireo high gain shoved up on the chimney. But getting this one past the Mrs is another matter. So it's a long term project at the moment......
