Hello all, now that we're in the midst of the 'summer doldrums' on HF, and in addition the sunspot cycle is in decline, I thought I'd give 2Mtr sideband a go, what a surprise! OK, not much activity a lot of the time, but I picked the Tuesday contest to give it a go. Using 10w and a simple 3 element yagi from my poor QTH 5m ASL I managed Ayreshire in Scotland, Northumberland, Surrey, Wales and loads closer to home. With days and even weeks going by with little activity on HF it seems a pity not to be using the V/UHF bands a bit more. If you've got a shack in a box and haven't tried VHF SSB why not put up a simple dipole and try it out, maybe post up times/freqs and you might be as surprised as me just how well it works....... 73

Sorry that I didn't get you in my log Andy.
I heard a decent signal from QE and I know it wasn't Asda Dave or James.
Not a bad night for me.
48 contacts in 16 UK squares and Gerard (F8BRK) without being swamped out by stations in 93 square lol.

Yes Tony, I heard a couple of French stations and a Belgian, I didn't try going back to them though, thought I'd be pushing my luck, more than happy with GM,. I'm sure I heard you, must have passed like ships in the night!

Sometimes its worth having a go, Andy. Some of those stations have bloody good ears.
Have a go at them late on when the worse of the pileups have subsided

I enjoy 2m ssb, some localish chaps to me we have a chat couple of times a week, but contesting isnt my thing tbh, ive picked up a couple of gems in the past month, a Yaesu 290r mk2 with Mutec front end, it pulls very weak signals in a treat, also a very nice Kenwood 751e 2m all mode, also a lovely radio, hf has been a bit woeful past months so 2m is great for a rag chew local or bit of dx ssb, try it you might like it !

Hi,

I'm interested in the 'summer doldrums' bit of your opener.

I've only been on HF for a couple of years.

For some reason I've always associated the summer months with lots of radio activity, but maybe that's just been 21mhz and upwards in the high sun spot cycle.

Just recently I've noticed that 14mhz is deadish pretty much all day and only gets good very late afternoon and into the evening. I just thought it was a run of bad luck on conditions (?)

So my question is this. Are you saying that in the absence of sun spots etc. 14 mhz is bad in summer, ..but BETTER in winter ? (and maybe 7 mhz too ?)
