Albrecht AE2990 RF Output; Max output seems a bit low

Hello everyone.

Being somewhat new at practical RF tinkering, I thought I should throw this question out here, since someone might be able to directly answer or at least point me in the right direction.

I have one of the handheld Albrecht AE2990 sets and have been starting to wonder about the output power. The specs read 4W at the "high"/standard setting, but through the SWR/Power meter, I only measure about 2-2.1W coming out of it. I dump the power in a 50 ohm dummy attached to the power meter. I do get about the same number when I measure power going to my external antenna (which has an SWR of ~1.5).
I should maybe mention that these measurements were made with the radio tuned to both the CEPT band and the UK band (setting 'U') and with a power supply able to provide more than 15W attached rather than batteries.

Does anyone know or have a suggestion as to whether this is a bug, a perfectly correct behaviour or an obvious error on my side when measuring.
I should maybe have tried one of the other band settings, I will do that tonight, but as far as I know it should be able to provide 4W FM/AM/SSB on CEPT and 4W FM on UK in the 'U' setting.
(For reference, see e.g. specs at Radiozing)

Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,

If The Radio is putting out 2 Watts I would not worry.4 watts out will deaden The Battery very quickly.I have used 2 Watts out on A Harvard Handheld successfully for many Years.

Thanks for the reply.

That is perfectly true, and I don't mind at all it only putting out 2 W when I'm out and about, longer battery time is always nice.

I was mainly curious as to wether it is preset to only output the two watts or if I'm doing something wrong when measuring, or for that matter tuning my antenna (even if I get the same values with a dummy load), as I am running it off a mains connected power supply while at home, so there should be no shortage of input power ;)

Hi Erik, I had one of those a while back, it gave 4w on FM, 2.5 on SSB. It worked quite well with an external antenna, managed to have a QSO with Roy's wife, Syl, in Corsica, and also into Germany no probs, hope you enjoy it matey.
They say hard work never killed anyone..........but why take the chance?

I've had two of these and one of them was 2w on FM/AM and about 2.5w with a whistle on SSB. I think the ones with lower output are the later ones. Sure your battery will last longer with 2w but if you're paying for 4/12w you would expect to get just that. I'd have another but no good for dx on 2w. It can be done but takes some effort.
