I used to be on legal and AM CB back in the late 70's and early 80's as a kid and then later on with work in the truck, well i decided to give it another go but having spent a bit of time flicking through the channels im wondering if Ive done the right thing :)

I bought a president grant 2 because after years of waiting its finally legal :)

Anyhow where do I go to find out how to use the damned thing :) Where do I find 'normal' people to talk to? Is it still 19 to get started? Do people use AM or FM? Lots of questions but Im sure you guys can help me?

Cheers

Firstly, CB is very quiet these days!

In some areas you can go weeks without hearing anyone.

Try channel 19 on the UK FM band or leave your radio scanning through the channels.

Mid band (EU) is mostly used when conditions are good to hear continental stations which can be AM/FM or SSB. Midweek/weekend nets do take place around the country on this band as well, usually on SSB.

A search on Facebook for "CB radio" will reveal lots of pages with information.

Hi Mick,
There is 'some' life on UKFM, mainly due to passionate operators who run 'nets' on various evenings (or daytime too at the weekends mainly).
Some area's you can find good operators on CH19, but to be honest, it is a bit 'hit & miss'. While it is great that some users do actually still use CH19 (because if nobody used it, there would be no point at all in even selecting it), it is quite a common 'complaint' that many CH19 operators simply sit on there and do not move to another channel, which 'blocks' 19 as a calling channel, much to the frustration of others.
And yes, you will probably hear arguments/swearing, music playing, and just general muppet behaviour on there too lol.
Flick around the other channels though, mainly in the evenings, and you might be surprised to hear quite a bit of activity. Here in my area, we do have regulars that chat on CH21, and CH36 most evenings, and sometimes on CH38 too.
As for other frequencies, you might find a bit of DX on the CEPT band (the old midband) especially when the propagation is in our favour.
And of course, there are 'other' area's of 11m that are quite active, but best not discuss those in this 'legal' section ;)

Hi mick :hi:

It's hard to find a good old solid biscuit tin these days
I was using a pizza tray for a while but was crap so upgraded
To a steel paella pan with a nice flat bottom and pretty heavy just bend the handles down so it lays flat
Magmount sticks to it like glue and a nice low swr
£3.99 from poundstrechers

To be honest Mick, your probably better off using a separate SWR meter, the built-in ones on modern radio's don't tend to be too accurate.

10m Fishing rod and a coax antenna like a T2LT is probably your cheapest but still good performance option.

You can make one for about a fiver, or buy one from ebay for a tenner (T2LT), and then you just need a fishing rod to mount it on, unless you can chuck some string up a big tree and hoist it up there, job done.

I like the sound of a coax antenna. I've got a few trees in the garden, what sort of range would you get off it?

They work as well as many 1/2 wave antennas that cost far far more......the roach pole that its strapped to is the biggest expense
