Thinking of putting a 40m horizontal loop antenna up in the loft (approx 30-35ft above ground in a square(ish) configuration). Currently using a 20m centre fed dipole with some success but interested to use a loop to maybe reduce noise..

Anyone use a loop? If so, how does it work for you

Wouldn't it be a cloud warmer ? as the signal on a loop comes out of the face?. I use a random length loop horizontal for RX only and I think it hears very well but wouldn't like to TX on it. (its actually resonant on the 12m band according to my crappy Chinese antenna analyiser)

Actually for 40 metres, that is a good way to go for inter G.
You will get some RF out the sides.
Just remember that, at resonance, a full wave loop is 100 ohms (2:1 swr) so you need something to transform down to 50 ohms.
A quarter wavelength of 75 ohm coax between the loop and the 50 ohm coax will work ( Dont forget the velocity factor of the coax, .66 for solid dielectric)

Only one way to find out Kev! I have seen reports where people have had success with them so willing to chance it. I am really delaying the inevitable hexbeam or cobweb purchase..

 Hex beam would be good , only left me with few inchs spare to fit in my garden, hence the cobwebb.

Is it up yet?

The thing that got me interested in the loop was a us station I heard using one on 20m he was booming through so it must be possible to make it work
