Hi

I am looking to get back on the air and probably using a multimode - all FM,AM USB etc.

Anyone still operating in West Sussex, Chichester, Bognor etc?

Hi Tim

Maybe a little on the edge of contact but I am a little further West around Fareham, setting up as I speak, just looking to get a fair size pole (of the upright mast mounting kind) and a antenna then ready to run, though do also have a mobile radio and mag mount but not gone mobile yet as can't get it to fit in anywhere permanent n the car. As I cannot keep it out of sight and my works don't like me bring one on their property I have not had much chance to use it yet.

Maybe with the right conditions we can make contact when both set up.

Do you use any local radio suppliers for bits, probably a well known one half way between us.
Regards
Steve

Hi Steve

I'm still in the process of obtaining my equipment so I'm intrigued you say there is a well known one between us, who are they? I was going to use one of the well known mail order ones.

Are you getting SSB plus FM AM too?

Looking forward to trying to make a copy your way.

Cheers

Tim

Hi Tim

Well Chichester is about 20miles (less as the crows fly) from me, 8 miles from me to Farlington you will find Nevada radio, tucked away at the end of an industrial site, been going for 45 or so years (originally based in Portsmouth and were called Telecoms in the 70s). A good small show room, CB, Ham, PMR, Short-wave, antennas, cables brackets etc. Not open on Saturdays which is the only draw back. Further afield the other way, Christchurch, (About an hr from me) is a small shop called the Short-wave shop. Tiny but packed with radios and other items, their web site does no do it justice as they have in stock items that are not listed (including some CBs).

I would most def, look in Nevada's if not been before though like you say many other good retailers exist around the UK and deals are always there to be found.

I got myself an Alinco 135 radio when they had them on special offer for £99, I still have to get an antenna for outside and a pole etc, I also got just last week on Gumtree, a nice York Homebase 40 ch fm uk radio for a very respectable price. Old set but looks and sounds wonderful even with a temporary short wire out the back to pick up signals on.

So yes looking to do some ssb and FM nets, also been playing around with 446 Mhz, so far no great distance like some on here but enjoying the fun aspect of it. (And that is what it is all about).
Regards
Steve

Silly me of course Nevada! Will be paying them a visit very soon.

Let me know when you are on the air Steve.

Thinking of using Selsey as a DX location as this might give me a slim chance to pick up the Eastbourne net.

Cheers

Ok will do Tim, Portsdown Hill / Downs, yes that ridge / hill though it gives mobiles height is a real pain, I am on the side slope of it at the Western far end, for me its a big dividing line, a massive signal blocker, I can only go South so far before hitting water so restricts getting the signal around it, then if on top because it rises and falls it is difficult to find a clear line of sight east or west, and large masts also pump out some strong signals which do not help.
I drew a line on Google maps to one of the Eastbourne area nets guys from a location on top of the hill, guess what was in the way? Chichester Cathedral, signal went bang centre through the building, now in reality it probably would not have much effect.

Selsey or Hayling would probably be good locations or a day run over to the Island and get up on the downs, that would give a clear over water run to the East and higher than the hills here so would reach inland to.

Good luck let me know how you get on and look forward to making contact.

I am usually in Selsey most weekends, now I know there are people getting back on the air I will start putting the radio in the car, as my wife said I need a new project to keep me quiet, I used to have a silver rod on our caravan and would get into Portsmouth on a basic rig, now using a Anytone5555 for home base in Bracknell with a wire dipole which will soon go in the loft as an inverted V.

I will start keeping my ears open

Anytone 6666 with Sirio 5000 magmount on a Range Rover

I think you know enough to pass it Tim, from your posts you have a good knowledge already. Above all I enjoyed learning about the basics of how radio actually works.

I was in the area from Thursday last week, not many people on any of the channels, a couple of old fellas on 19 chatting merrily away. Not sure if they could hear me or were just ignoring me :doh2:

Went to Nevada on Thursday and treated myself to an AT6666 for the car, all set up with a Sirio 5000 managed to get a rig check on th Saturday from a chap in Littlehampton, :thumb:

Will be back doe 23/24 of this month :)

Up high ground in Goodwood tonight. Good copies with Worthing, pet worth, petersfield, gosport, Isle of Wight. With mini nets on 3 channels. T5 very busy with French Italian and Spanish stations but not able to get through. A very nice night with a new location already suggested by a breaker tonight for reaching further west. So come on guys in the area, let's all get on the air!!

Hi Tim , since coming back on air in Aug.2014, from my perch on the Mendip Hills Ive worked stations from Landsend across to Maidstone up to Huntstanton,Hull,York and across to Preston back down to Aberystwyth and lots of places in between but have yet to even HEAR a station from West Sussex (or Suffolk for that matter) so will be listening for you.
