Hi guys, looking to get a homebase twig, for CB'ing including SSB, really liked my old starduster back in the day, are they any good for todays rigs ? or what would you recommend, dont want to go too high, ( I know height is everything, lol ) I see some dypoles that sit way above the building, putting it up at work so dont want to be too conspicuious, any recommendations would be great, thanks Paul 26ct1869 Edited by Stormtrooper, Friday, 30. TBH mate there aint many too inconspicuous home base antennas about really , plus all depends on your situation at work, what is your situation at work TBH do you want the antenna hidden from people if so you have no chance of a decent home base antenna going up, if you are allowed a largish antenna and one that you can put up and down with ease there is a couple I would recommend but recommending home base antennas brings out the red eye of evil on here cos we all have our own opinions on the subject LOL , if you could give more info on where at work you want to put it IE: is it gonna be permanent or taken down every day or what would help with some more advice we can give

Something like a wire dipole can be almost invisible. If you can get it in a decent inverted V shape, it will be fairly Omni-directional, but if it's 'flat' then it will be very directional. Also, because it is flat, it will not be that great (distance wise) when trying to contact people on Vertical antenna's. It will be reasonable for DX though. Have you considered a T2LT coax antenna, these are cheap and as good as a 1/2 wave silver rod. If you can hang it from somewhere high away from metal objects it will work great for local & DX. I use one as a base antenna, taped to what is basically a 12 metre glassfibre fishing rod. |

Wire dipole cheap and easy depending on the wire you can make it almost invisible. You could use magnetis wire, the type they use on small electric motors but I dont know how strong it is. I use 1.5mm stranded wire really cheap and works well enough for me you can still see it but not as much as a vertical up a height. Here is mine, its a multi band so huge a cb wire dipole would be under 18 feet long its the coax that would show up more. Maybe use the corner of a wall for your attachement and have the dipole coming off fro that point Sorry if Im telling you how to suck eggs lol

hi guys, have put up my inverted v dipole, in the process of swr'ing it, but not sure the best way for mutiple modes, i am trying the readings on channel 20 on AM.FM and FM UK all readings are different, do i just get a happy medium across the three modes. or just tune it on one? sorry if this seems a bit basic but haven't done this before thanks in advance Paul 26ct1869 |

Paul, Always check SWR on FM mate, don't use AM/USB/LSB. Just check it on the middle of the band you are using it on. If you want to use both UK FM and the CEPT frequencies, you may just struggle a bit, as that is quite a wide range of frequencies you are expecting a wire to tune to. But, try it on Ch1 UK FM (27.60125), and then CH40 CEPT (27.405) and see if it is ok on both of those (ok being around 1:1.5). It will probably be higher on CH40 UK FM (27.99125) but if it is under 1:2.1 then you are still safe to use low power (20w or less). The same with CH1 CEPT (26.965), if it's under 1:2.1 then your still safe. I would imagine though, it may not quite be as widebanded as this, as that is quite a big ask of a wire dipole, usually they will be fine for one or the other (UK FM or CEPT), but probably won't manage both. In case your not 100% sure : Switch the SWR meter to 'SET' or 'FWD' and key the mic. Whilst the mic is keyed on FM, turn the 'CAL' knob until the needle is sitting on the end of the scale (it should have a mark 'SET'). Then switch the 'FWD' / 'SET' button to 'REF' and key again without adjusting the CAL, this will now display your SWR reading. Edited by Nik Gnashers, Thursday, 5. November 2015, 21:48.
