G5RV Jr. Height off ground

Can any of you antenna buffs help me please.
I have a G5RV half-size dipole which, according to various suppliers, should be at least 36' high at the centre. Mine is at 20' and seems to work quite well although I don't have a lot of experience of this antenna, or many others come to that!
I live in the south of France and get out to most of Europe on 11m with a nearly north/south orientation. Most of these QSOs are in Germany/Holland/UK but some are in Finland and Russia the furthest being 3500 kms.
This is with 100 watts, no amp.
My question is whether it would be worth the effort in getting the antenna up say another 6/7 feet or wouldn't it make a lot of difference as it would be a lot of work on my roof!

Hi Ian, wouldn't have thought it would make a lot of difference unless the extra lifts it above the building or some other obstruction. I was always taught that a half wave above the ground is optimum but of course that is theoretical and not really practical. I think if you can get a reasonably clear take off then it should be fine. Bear in mind that you are seldom working ground wave so height is not always the be all and end all because you are looking for the angled upwards radiation to refract off the ionosphere. I had many years using the same antenna and that was at about the same height as yours and gave me some really surprising results. Working hf dx flatside the old misconception that 'Height is might' just does not apply..............Mick

Thanks for your input. I agree with what you say, I just wanted someone else to say it!
I do have some obstructions around like some barns but I suppose the take off angle must be ok as I do get out, it's just that people do say "height is might" and if the antenna is not at the recommended height, could it perform better.

On a side note I run a full g5rv at about 20ft would it be worth using a roach pole type mast (non carbon of course) to jack the center up abit so to about 30ft making it a inverted v type shape also the ladder line could run up the pole.Would it affect performance worse/better?

I have a 1/2 size g5rv I have had up about 20 years, my wife uses it from 40 to 6 with the atu but I really only use it for 80/40/30.
It is about 25ft one end and 20ft the other end.

I would rather just cut some wire and make a single band dipole for 11 mtrs as the g5 will work on 11 but I think a single band dipole for 11 would give you better results.
