No radio for me at the moment, since i have had the 4 element beam installed i am having problems. 1. High SWR! ( *easy fix ) 2. Needle on the radio not moveing. ( not sure if its down to conditions as of late? ) 3. Audio reports are very quiet at distance. ( only started with the 4 elemnt beam ) 4. *Gonna fix the high swr this weekend. Going to make a RF Choke / Ugly Baun The coax (RG213) is 65Ft approx 25ft from the top of the beam / down the mast and buried below ground inside 2 galvanised steel poles 35ft to the house ( would this be a issue having the coax inside the steel poles underground ? ) My neighbours have a leylandii tree approximately 23ft+ tall near where the 4 elemnt beam is located i need to raise the 21ft pole another 3ft / 5ft to clear the leylandii tree becuase atm the beam will not rotate fully because it come in to contact with the rear elemt of the beam. Will the leylandii tree affect the 4 element beam in anyway ? (my guess is yes) i greatly underestimated the distance between where the beam was going to be installd and the proximity to the leylandii tree. ( Doh' ) Moveing the beam and 21ft pole is NOT a option, But cutting there leylandii tree down is a option but they wouldnt be happy. ![]() |

Hi Charlie Just a thought. If you think the steel poles are a problem, I have a ground mounted sat dish 30m away from the house and I have buried the coax inside an old garden hose which does protect it but doesn't seem to cause any problems. It's flexible to a degree as well. Ian |

If the tree over hangs the fence you can cut it but that seems too high I have my cable going underground in pvc piping as the kids kept tripping over it, no problems with pvc pipe underground from my location, if you can run another cable down to the end of the mast and see if there is any diffence

Neither the tree or the poles are an issue. If you are talking about signal reports to local stations and your antenna is horizontal then they will be very low compared to using a vertical antenna. Signals are polarised - horizontal from horizontal antennas, vertical from vertical ones. Cross polarisation costs you several S points. Other than that, the sun turned off HF again this week so there's very little DX but it should pick up however it may take some time. Edited by Northern Crusader, Saturday, 10. October 2015, 13:59.

the best thing to do is get some PVC pipe and replace the steel pole's with that, i do have a hose pipe but that has some holes in the damn thing however i could find the holes in the hose pipe and use self amalgamating tape to cover them which would work out cheeper that buying PVC pipe. As you can see in this image the rear element touches the tree and this is why the mast is going to have to be raised another 3/5ft FullSize Image |

Mines close to the tree and swr is not a issue to be honest I would remove the flag and tune it at about 6ft and than put it back up, my 3 element works well at 6m on 10/11m can work the world when conditions are good... hope to hear you on the bands

Coax thro a steel pipe will not affect performance whatsoever. Bear in mind the centre core is already screened by the copper braid outer. An extra bit of screening by the steel wont come amiss, probably make no difference but if it did would only be to the good. The tree wont have any affect either unless it is physically preventing to beam to rotate, in which case to raise it is the only practical answer. However be prepared to raise it some more in a couple of years, cos those leylandi grow at a tremendous rate. Mick |

Yeah thanks guys for the help / advice all taken on board the flag has been removed, it was never intended to be a permanent fixture it was directed at the neighbours due to complaints to the council and health and safety department. just my was of having a laugh. I have had antennas of various types at the bottom of the garden for around 24 years with out planing permission, and the inspector that payed a visit last month said he would send us the papers for planning permission but nothing arrived and i don't expect anything in the post anytime soon.
