Hi Clive, as far as I'm aware the G5RV is fed by a 70:ohm: ladder line which forms part of the antenna elements and terminates in a SO259. As a rule of thumb, I try to use the best coax for the conditions (usually RG Mini 8) and keep the run as short as possible. As I have never used one however, I am open to correction from anyone who has used one and will know better than me. Hope this helps 73 |

I have a G5RV half size which came with instructions that the coax should be 45 or 90 ft from the ladderline to the tuner. I have to say I get good results with this for what is a small compromise antenna. The Full size G5RV from the same seller specifies the same lengths of coax. |

What we did was dump the coax. In the case of a full size G5RV, I had issues with the twin feeder breaking at the coax connector. As I had another G5RV do the same, I joined the 2 lengths of twin feeder with a chocolate block connector and ran the twin feeder straight to the ATU. This arrangement worked well up to and including 80 metres but on Topband, a friend was only s7, however extending the top with the remnants of the other G5RV, he came up to s9+10dB. Another thing to be aware of is that in mis matched situations (High SWR which you WILL have beyond your ATU) losses go absolutely screaming through the roof with coax. |

Hi Clive I forgot say that I use 90ft of coax as my "shack" is in a small bedroom on the other side of the house and it just makes it. I would use the full size G5RV but it would leave the vertical ladderline dropping right in the middle of my drive, not to be recommended! I have also taped up the join to give it more strength and keep water out. I can't get it more than 24 ft off the ground, which wouldn't suit the full size, so all in all I'm happy with it. |
