Hi all, I got a ft817nd earlier this year and got the tuner for it aswell.

I made a simple wire antenna with a telescopic fishing pole. I have a ground wire running along the floor at the bottom of the antenna and a ground stake from the tuner, but I always get bad qrm on all of the hf bands. Sometimes the qrm is a 7 or 8 on the s bar.

Could someone please give me some advice on what to do to counteract the qrm.

First of all determine what kind it is. You need to eliminate your house as the source by turning off the electrics at the mains and then seeing if its still there by running your 817 on batteries. I had a cheap third party laptop charger that came with a customers laptop that spat out +60dB throughout the entire RF spectrum I could measure and was so bad it disabled the touchpad on the laptop when it was plugged in which was the fault the laptop came in for.

If its in your house, get a cheap handheld AM radio, tune to a weak station and walk around the house and see where the noise appears.

If its not in your house then make a small loop antenna, plug into the HF socket on the 817 and go for a walk and do some direction finding. Mine ended up being PLT from home network over mains things a street away.

Next is a complaint to OFCOM if you're a licensed amateur and its affecting the amateur bands. They should send out a field engineer to investigate. Mine was 2 weeks from initial complaint to complete silence after the field engineer visited the offender and sent out a cease and desist notice.

Hi Matt,

Is it QRM or QRN that you are suffering from ? ....because they are very different.

"Strictly speaking QRN means "noise from natural sources" as opposed to QRM which means "man-made noise". The abbreviation QRN is oftern used in in general terms to mean any noise that interferes with propagation or reception of transmissions"

Intresting topic. I've been suffering with varying degrees of qrm, which has been time dependent, strength and band width also. Made a df loop and low and behold it's the local distribution box. All adds up now. They buzz anyway, but load makes it worse and appear to change frequencys. Granted there's other sources nearby, but this is by far the worse. It cycles every 0.070mhz and has a half brother wave which shows up at peak times. Question is, what can you do :thumb:
