26 Charlie Tango 1853

Hello everyone. I've just bought a new CB for my car. Albeit dabbling a little years ago I am non the wiser and need some guidance.
My first question is how popular is CB these days ? I can visualise never speaking to anyone on my CB for a month of Sunday's unless I deliberately set up a 10:4 ( I think that's the right terminology for a conversation with someone?
I remember the 80's and there were plenty of people using CB's then. Or am I going to have to use a massive aerial and listen on AM to get a wider area?
Thanks.😊

Hi Mark,
Welcome to CT DX group.
I have issued you the call-sign : 26CT1853, good luck.
CB has risen in popularity slightly since the legalisation of the old mid band frequencies (now called CEPT, most ppl call them EU band).
It does vary in different area's, some places have life, but others seems dead. There are plenty of European stations on the CEPT, although the solar cycle is on the decline now, and propagation is dropping.
I think you should find a few operations on in your area, although AM is not very popular. UK FM 27/81 is ok, and FM on CEPT is ok, but USB/LSB (which is legal now) on CEPT is probably your best chance for a longer distance contact.

My findings are when the propagation/skip flows the bands are full of operators around the world making contact, its brilliant and seems as busy as it was back in the 70s/80s all the channels are used on all modes, SSB AM FM.

But TBH I find the whole band a little on the dead side for local contacts. I have a few mates I speak to on on a regular basis but your looking at maybe 5 channels used at the most day/night. A few weeks back I drove from the Tyneside to Yorkshire and only made about 7 contacts in total there and back. I was very disappointed.

A lot of people now have gone on the ham bands as its not as hard now to get a licence, its great because you can nearly always find a band that has propagation running but for me the cb 11metre band will always be my favourite when the conditions are right.
