Thinking of getting licensed to work 40,20 and 17m bands.

Is there one antenna I can use for all? I don't want a garden full of them with my curious neighbours.

I'm interested in DX when the 11m band is quiet.

I made a simple long dipole the tuner sorts out the VSWR and its multi band. It works very well. As mine you dont have to have them straight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH0RNlr9cqE

40m dipole @ 33ft each side and a Antron 99 or a Imax 2000 works for me

Hi Richard, try this chap, His name is Howard, e-mail G4YKB@mail.com
He builds a multiband long wire antenna which is 66ft long and works in almost any configuration covering top band to 6mtrs. Mine cost about £70. He is a really nice bloke and very helpful.
Hope this helps

Simple wire dipole or end fed antenna as Razor mentioned, they are cheap and the satisfaction you get of operating around the globe on something you made.

I just use 1.5mm stranded wire, a chockbloc and some duct tape to seal it, saves me a fortune and works really well and mine is low down.

For what they are I have never understood anyone paying lots of cash for a wire antena, that was not meant to sound disrespectful to anyone that buys or makes them to sell on by the way but at the same time Ive never used a bought one so not sure of the differences but if you make it abroad then it works as far as Im concerned.

Good luck in which ever way you go and let us know how you get on.

Hi Richard, if you don't want to go down the route of antenna tuners or antenna switches and multiple feeders, take a look at fan, or parallel dipoles. Basically two or three dipoles all connected to the one feeder, straight into the radio, no tuner needed. 73, Andy.

In addition, altough a 10mtr end fed will no doubt tune up on 40mtr, I bet 2.5w into a resonant dipole would beat 100w into the end fed/tuner combo, and you get the same increase in received signal too!

I made one of these my mate was fascinated they work a treat, I tried to alter and modify it, why I dont know as I got all over the world with the way it was, basically I cocked it up spat my dummy out and took it down hahaha. The wife didnt appreciate it either she said it was the worst thing I had stuck up in the air hahaha.

But yes I second these antennas they are brilliant.

Go batter the wife with the ARRL wire antenna book and show what mess you could have up there :thumb:

Maybe but its the recieve antenna doing all the work...when you can work simple antenna to simple antenna then you know your antenna is a decent one...

I can work into states on 10m with a firestik and 5w if the recieve station has a 4 ele beam :thumb:

and my 4 ele cushcraft at 885ft asl lets me hear the faintest signal from those non resonant tuned antennas too :thumb: :thumb:

im not saying my antenna is great, im saying it works. the op asked for an antenna that works on all bands and is wife and neighbour friendly.

maybe if he does pass his test he can get a 100ft tower with an ele beam like yours lol :thumb:

The fan dipole is a fine easy beastie to get you up and running. I have one cut for 40, 20 and 10 and I can bring in 17 easily. It started life as a 40m only which meant resonance on 15m too but not since I added the extra wires. Mine isn't all that high, only 22 feet up but gives half decent results on a good day ;)

Im sure it does work but i agree with Monster`s comment that a resonant antenna will work far better than wire and a tuner...but many dont have the room so fair enough :thumb:

:thumb:

edit: a 100ft tower would be nice but mines only 70ft ;)

You need 3 antennas
Long wire for 160/80/40 try and run it north to south
Some kind of 2m/70cm stick 510s are good similar size to a gain master
And a spider beam for everything else
The 2m/70cm stick can be mounted on top of the spider beam and the long wire anywhere so it shouldn't look to bad
