Hi Guys - thanks for the warm response. My first problem is the antenna - looking online for CB antennas they are huge! As I am interested in long distance DX, and don't fancy planning permission, what do you guys do? Stick up the antenna and hope for the best? Fit a mobile one in the attic? Any suggestions would be very welcome. James |

Hello and welcome, James. Due to various restrictions at my home qth, I have stuck with mobile operation. It can be better for dxing, if you can get to a high location with good take-off and a low noise level. You can even rig-up a home-base antenna when out static-mobile. I sometimes use an Antron99 or a two-element yagi. If you want to stay with a home-base set-up, you should consider antennas that are less conspicuous. Antron99, Imax 2000, Gainmaster, Silver Rod etc. As for planning permission you would need to ask you local authority, as I think it varies from one council to the next. 73s John. |

James, Have a look on your local council's website, it may give you some information on what you are allowed to do. Most council regulations apply to 'fixed structures', so basically if you bolt metal brackets to your house, and have a scaffold pole 20 foot long with a CB antenna on the top, that is 'fixed'.... There are a few ways around this. You could use some form of telescopic mast. Some are metal and 'push-up' with a bolt to hold each section once it is in the UP position, I had a 3 element Yagi on a 12 metre one, just held upright with guy lines, and clamped to a strong clothes post. What I now use is a fibreglass 'spiderbeam mast', which is telescopic (and is classed as a TEMPORARY STRUCTURE), and is also 12 metres high, and taped to the mast is an antenna called a T2LT (which is basically made from coax). It works just as well as any 1/2 wave 'bought' antenna I have owned, and I have spoken to about 70 countries on it, in the past 9 months. A temporary structure, as long as it is obvious it 'can' be raised and lowered, does not need any form of permission (well not in my council regulations anyway). They (the T2LT) are very cheap to buy (from Ebay), at under £10. You will need coax tor each your radio, and a 2-way barrel connector (which allows two PL259 plugs to be joined together). If you have a large tree in your garden, you could catapault a line over the top, and pull up a T2LT so that it is hidden in the tree, and it should work great. Many people just put antenna's up anyway, and have no issues. If nobody complains then you will probably never hear anything from your local council about it. |
