Does anyone know how am compares to Ssb for distance contacts? Is it worth having a net on AM? |

In this modern day of electrical interference I find that the range on AM is very poor compared to SSB or FM for that matter. If you are lucky enough to live in an area without interference you should find that AM is a really good mode to use but SSB will still get you further. |

I believe out of the modes AM will perform less than FM and SSB. The further away you are on AM the quieter you will sound. This is less of a problem on FM, and SSB has more power to start with. I'm far from being an expert on this and may be wrong... Chris |

I have to agree with what's been said,im plagued with noise on am at my qth.Seems to be from about 26.965 to 27.500ish,bearable on ssb and nowt on fm.So needless to say am don't get much use, which is real shame coz back in the day it was the nutz......................... |

As a rule of thumb, signal to noise ratio increases as bandwidth decreases So SSB (with narrower bandwidth) than either AM or FM, will have a better (higher) signal to noise ratio, |

Using the propagation with the USA as a benchmark, I have often asked to flick between modes for a look see. SSB modes are of course the best, but as the question is AM and FM these are my findings. Technical stuff aside which sees no argument from me AM kicked FM all day. A decent QSO can be had with slight QRN but on FM its falls to just about readable. My most memorable play around was on a Grant 1. Also on the EU40, all modes have been made available for sometime and its nearly always AM that I hear before FM breaks through. Its like a propagation measure......AM is in the background standby for a bit of prop. But that's just my finding. I do think, like what AE is best, its down to QTH and surroundings. |

If your net is for local QSO's then AM is very good , and if up on a hill distances of 90miles (personal opinion ) might be possible, ssb will win hands down for a DX net. Kevin |

I have done CB since 1981 and Amateur radio since 1987.My findings are that SSB is best,AM 2ND and FM last.If You read up on The capture effect You will see That AM is certainly different to FM. |

When I started back in the 1975' we was all on AM (illegally) well back then CB was totally illegal anyway , but I use to get miles on AM , saying that we also did'nt have all the interference we have now cos back then no internet so no WiFi , no Mobile phone masts, Plasma T.V's that causes the problems with CB now , in fact back then we was the ones alegerly causing all the interference using the CB 's LOL but for proper DXing SSB is the best ,TBH FM is just a noise that gives me a headache
