Hello all, after some google searching I have found this forum. I am interested in CB / Amateur Radio, however if I am honest i have genuinely no idea where to start! I remember my Dad and Brother having a CB radio when I was a child in the 90's Can anyone suggest any good resources to have a read up on the hobby? I live in the South East of England. I wouldnt mind starting with some kind of Hand Held, I dont mind going second hand if i am to get a good deal. I am just completely lost when it comes to PMR, CB, HAM, UHF etc. Coincidentally I am a daily user of the Airwave network, make of that what you will Regards Alan |

Hi Alan, Welcome to CT DX group. CB can be a rewarding & fun hobby/pastime. It is a lot different nowadays, to when it was in it's 'heyday', back in the early 1980's. The channels were jam packed with CB'ers back then, but these days it is a lot quieter, and in some area's is actually almost none existent. There are more channels (frequencies) available to us in the UK now, than there were back in the 1980's, and you are also legally allowed to use sideband modes which were previously illegal to use. These sidebands (upper sideband & lower sideband) are great for making contacts over long distances. By using whats called 'propagation', you can talk to people in other countries quite easily, depending on how strong the propagation is (it varies). Will you be using it from home, or from a mobile installation (car) ? A hand-held transceiver will be very limited in range with it's built-in antenna, and if possible you would be much better using a 'proper' radio. As for antenna's, there are some cheap options which work very well. Many people use something called a T2LT which is basically an antenna made from a length of coax (I use one as my main home base antenna). One of these (which is approx. 18 feet long) taped to a fibreglass fishing rod can yield very good results, I myself have spoken to most countries in Europe on mine, and a few even longer distances too. There are many different aspects to this hobby, and you could maybe consider finding a local amateur radio club and doing your foundation exam. It's quite easy, but will allow you to use many more different frequencies legally, and open up a whole new world where there are other options to communicate, instead of just speech ![]() Nik |
