Hi all, I'm looking into getting CB Radio but unsure what I would require, so any help appreciated!

As a bit of an intro as to why I need one, I work around Scotland and quite often in the back and beyond areas where phone signal is weak to non existent, quite often up in the hills off the paved roads. As its coming into winter again its got me concerned that if I get stuck or break down etc, I'm pretty screwed!

Now I'm not sure if a CB Radio would be the right answer as I'm not sure of the range etc, but its all I know of without your expert advice.

So in a nutshell, would CB Radio be the right solution, and if so what would be the right equipment to get?

Thanks in advance.

(p.s. It will be vehicle mounted 12V)

New members normally introduce them selves and tell others members a bit about there radio history before asking advise
but to answer your question TBH how long is a bit of string really if we knew more of exactly your needs any way for a start you need a CB radio and a CB antenna thats the first thing second is it just for local communication IE: base to vehicle or do you have intentions of taking the hobby further IE; DXing or hilltopping the more info you give the more advise others can give

by the way welcome CT as you never introduced yourself

if you got the cash id go for a multimode radio over a straight 40 cb. something like these for most beginners

Hi Lewis,
Welcome to CT DX group.
If this was 30 years ago, I would say yes, CB is a great way to ensure emergency contact when there is no other way.
But, this is 2015, and CB is more of a niche hobby. You may find there is literally nobody within your contact range to speak to, for direct antenna-to-antenna communication (groundwave as we call it).
You may find operators to speak to within range, but there is no way I would rely on it for an emergency.
You would need a radio, and an antenna, and some form of mount to attach it to your vehicle. You may also need an SWR meter to check the antenna is correctly tuned for the frequencies you will be transmitting on.
You do not need any licence to use the two legal bands (two 40 channel 'banks' of frequencies available to the UK).
Range, if you got a decent mobile antenna, like a Sirio HighPower 4000, with a legal radio, would be somewhere between 10 & 25 miles, depending on the terrain, and what obstacles are in between you and the other station.
Hope this helps,
Nik

I wouldn't think of a CB as emergency communications unless you are working as a group of vehicles and all have them installed. But in Scotland in winter off road and on your own.... there simply won't be anyone to hear you...

If your concern is if you break down then make sure you tell people when you expect to be at your destination, the route your taking warm clothing and blankets and food.

So would i.....if you go on ch19 expecting help you will probably be laughed at or worse abused by the :muppet: who frequent there most of the time and if you was using a multimode radio on ssb the band police will ask you to move off any call freqs...

I wouldnt use cb/freeband radio for emergencies  unless your lucky enough to be in a area where cb is respected :thumb:
