In my opinion,a waste of time if you get a direct strike with or without one.Your be buying a new radio, antenna, and coax + whatever else is in line ................... No doubt there will be a bid difference of opinions, but then if we all agreed with each other all the time it wouldnt be as much fun........................ |

(I am writing this post to protect myself against possible prosecution for being a moderator on this forum and not having removed or opposed perilous, life and property endangering advice.) For the so-called "waste of time", governments, industry, science, military and private households spend hundreds of millions of British pounds each year. Indeed a lot of time is being "wasted" with installing appropriate lightning and surge protection. Unfortunately Dave (Lagerland) is absolutely clueless about lightning protection, he has not the faintest idea how lightning arresters work and how well devices can be protected with them, and he refuses to close this gap in his knowledge. Since not only your, but also the property and lives of others are in danger, I therefore urge you to thoroughly read and learn about lightning protection yourself. A good starting point would be the Wikipedia articles on lightning and on lightning arresters, Wiki: Lightning Wiki: Lightning Arrester We have already had a similar topic in the past: Click for LINK In addition, you can find hundreds of very good videos on Youtube and other portals which explain and demonstrate the mode of operation and the effectiveness of lightning arresters. In any case, lightning and surge protection is not a matter of opinion, but of laws and regulations made by your respective government (in your case by the British government). You can find some of the important and appropriate documents in our documents section: Legal Documents Although lightning voltages and currents are enormous and absolutely deadly, with a professional lightning protection system your equipment behind (!) this system can be protected completely. This means that under the premise that you have installed everything correctly, there will be no damage whatsoever to your transmission line, SWR/Power meter, radios, TV sets, computers and whatever else you have installed behind the lightning arrester and surge protection system. You may wish to ignore this, follow Dave's advice and carelessly risk your own life and property. However, law requires you not to endanger the life and property of others. |

Charlie, this is a good question, but also a touchy subject for some people on this forum. For example, the link George made to a previous post has nearly four pages of argument. More links can be found on lightening and its protection when it comes to radio here. There is a lot of good information out there on this topic, and plenty of links available to you right here in this thread, please take the time to do some actual research on the subject. Another thing to research is how lightening rods actually work, they function very differently than most people actually believe, for example, they don't actually attract lightening, they repel it... The links I place are for those who can read. ![]() @Nubster: I have been here all along. As long as the other staff have no problems with it, you and Lagerland can go on with posting nonsense and mobbing other people all day long. But when you start to give advice which 1. seriously endangers the health, property and even the life of other members and readers, and which 2. seriously endangers other staff and me with getting a multi-million-pound prosecution, then I will not watch passively, even if you guys find that "not nice". P.S. If you feel that any important links are missing in the Documents section, you are happily invited to do something useful for a change, and participate. |

Reading through this thread, before I started typing this post there are 16 existing posts. The first is a question. Three of the rest actually tried to help the original poster. All of the rest of the posts, that is three out of four posts overall, are nonsense, bickering, and name calling. How does this help the forum? How does this help the person asking a question? How does this help others who may also have the same, or a similar questions? How does this make all of us look? Seriously, is this really how we, both the users and the mods/admins, want these forums to be represented? Not long after I first joined this forum I was told by a member of this forum, that was also on other forums I frequented, that is more of a "Gentleman's" forum, and for the most part this forum lives up to that. What happened to that? The DB |
