First of all I would like to say if you don't ask the stupid questions how are you meant to learn. Now I know to tune a CB antenna in you need a SWR metre but what if you don't have one or the one you have has broken cant it still be tuned in without said metre? |

I definitely think it would be a wise investment in a new swr meter because you never know how high the swr could be and in the worst case you'd have to buy a new rig |

Some multi mode radios have a basic digital SWR meter built in (only a very rough guide), check your manual for details on how to set that up to display on TX. You can also set that to beep an alarm if the SWR goes above a predetermined value. I have mine set to show SWR on the display when I key up. That can be used to at least check it is low enough to TX. A needle SWR meter is not an expensive item. They are about £10.00 so I strongly recommend buying one. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SWR-METER-FOR-CB-ANTENNA-RADIO-POWER-DUAL-RANGE-METAL-CABINET-METRE-100W-/251541548052?hash=item3a910b6c14 Unless you have one then it is a little risky to TX without knowing the properties of the aerial. In a complete emergency and a known antenna that has previously worked ok, you can use a multi meter to continuity/short test your coax and key up for very short times and see if your radio gets excessively warm where the output transistors are bolted to the chassis. Not great and a bit risky but if you are in some emergency situation. No real permanent substitute for a SWR meter in the radio or a needle one. |

I would never and have never trusted a SWR meter thats built in the radio, always use a good quality separate external SWR meter
