Ok here is another question.
I am think about putting solar panles on the house roof. 7kw system. Its a lot of panels. I currently use a 2 element moxon and a sirio gainmaster. Has anyone else done this before and will it cause major interference? I would hate to have all this installed and not work out. I read some guys having s7 to s9 noise levels. Thanks again.73s

I have a 3.5 kw system and have had it for the last year or so.
I never noticed any spike in noise but then I have had high electrical noise here for years.

Mike, the problem is not with the panels themselves but the inverters that convert it to mains AC .
The only thing I can suggest is see if there is any info/reports on the ARRL website

I get QRM from a system 60 meters away from my house all over 11m band signal can be upto S9 on a sunny day. :(
The only good thing is its every 20HZ & does not fall on 5's OR 0's eg 27.553 ,27.573,27.593
It comes from the Solar panel inverter fitted in the property.

Link for sample of noise

Thanks guys for the replies. I did read that the inverters cause high levels of qrn. I think for the savings it may not be worth the aggrevation of ruing my hobby. Ill pass. 73s

Got one 100ft from my house. I can point my beam at it and not see a single thing from it in the waterfall on my Flex 6500 on the 20-6m bands that my antenna covers. Noise floors here are from around -112dBm on 20m to below -120dBm on 10m. I do have some QRM coming from somewhere 120 degrees from where that solar panel install is but the spikes from that fall as I turn towards the house where the panels are installed. Given that house is directly in line of fire for the USA/Canada its a direction I've pointed the antenna in quite a lot.

However I'd like to point out that I've only checked on the amateur bands and not 11m. It is known that manufacturers of BPL devices will notch out amateur and broadcast bands but spew crap out elsewhere such as 11m so that may want to be taken into consideration.

I'd have a system on my house and I've actively been looking but I would make sure that it was part of the terms of the installation that if it caused undue RFI that they sorted it.

Thx Northern Crusader
I spoke to engineer and he going to see maybe if they can use 1 inverter near fuse box instead of each panel having its own. They do not guarantee anything as far as rfi is concerned. So If its up and interference is there im beat and stuck with solar panels and a lot of qrn.. Savings are not that substantial so not really worried.. thx for input.

You may want to remind them that if it causes interference on frequencies where a license is required, i.e the amateur bands, the air band or the broadcast bands, that it is committing an offence under the Wireless Telegraphy Act regardless of the fact its not a radio transmitter so whilst they may not want to guarantee anything that Act plus EU EMC regulations demand they do.

So if they stick it up and it gives a load of hash on say the 10m band they have two options:

1) Fix it.
2) Remove and refund.

I think I would find someone else if they're not willing to guarantee that what they install complies with the law.

Is the Wireless Telegraphy Act valid.
I thought it only covered the UK ?
I'm sure there is something similar stateside though.

Well after speaking to the rep. There is no guarantees of not having interference.
So I cancelled. Thx. 73s
