While a dead short is not something you want in an electrical circuit, in some RF/antenna situations, a dead short is natural and acceptable part of the design. I'm no antenna genius but I have read this in a few places. |

They're a bit more broadbanded than a dipole but don't work any better. The dead short is right. It appears as a dead short to DC but not AC. Many balun designs such as the 4:1 used on Windoms and the 9:1 Unun used on some of the multi band verticals like the Prowhip is actually wired as a dead short for DC but isn't to AC/RF. Its why you should use an antenna analyser and not a normal multimeter or continuity tester for testing antennas for shorts because some of them are intentionally shorted. If you want a wire antenna to have a go at home brewing then look at the Moxon rectangle which is a 2 wire beam with around 30dBi front to back rejection and around 6-7dBi of gain. There's calculators online but remember they're for uninsulated wire so if using insulated wire reduce the dimensions by 4% as insulated wire appears 4-5% longer electrically to RF.
