Hi Scott, Not sure what an Astra twin-top is, other than a convertible. If the roof is a hardtop, then the mag should stick on ok, and should work fine too, as the coupling to ground is capacitance and not a direct connection. I'm not sure it will have a great range ie transmitted/received signal will probably not be more than 10 miles or so groundwave, as that antenna is not very long (and when it comes to mobile antenna's, bigger is usually better). It will work ok on the boot, but will be directional, and you will find it works better in the direction where there is most metal pointing, so towards the front of the car. The 12v cig lighter / socket is not really suitable for powering a CB, as they do draw a fair amount of amps. Some cars seem to be ok at 7amps draw through the socket, and a very small number up to 10amps, but most are not really capable of much more than 3 amps, it's a bit hit & miss. By far the best way to power your CB is by wiring it straight to your car battery. You should find a hole in the bulkhead and be able to poke some decent thick power leads through, and feed it behind the glove compartment or something. Don't try and wire your amp to the cig lighter socket, it will almost definitely blow another fuse, and may even overheat the wiring and cause a fire ! Nik |

Some of these foild away hard tops have an aluminium roof. The one on my dads's BMW does. The antenna isn't very good though I am afraid, the magnet is too small for a good ground and as the antenna is short it will be inefficient at CB frequencies, you will also have trouble getting a low SWR over the legal 80 channels. |

if you have a fridge magnet try and see if its hard to get off if there is no resistance then the roof is probably ali in which case you will have to make a physical fix |

Hi I'm just wondering if have thought about a boot/hatch back mount (without stepping on anyone's toe's.) NavadaRadio.co.uk have a huge sellection of mounts i.e Comet RS-730. Worked well on my old car, many a bent whip in multi-story's but the clamp did'nt move, bend or brake. A very universal mount if a little pricey. As far as your amp goes (naughty tut tut) I would recomend an Amp wireing kit (Halfords are quite good for price £20 ish) Your going to get everyting in the kit water proof fuse holder for under your bonnet, connectors and plenty of cable and I'm sure you will find a use for the spare. Oh yea try and keep your rig and burner 900 mm apart no more no less or weard pooh happens. Good luck and 73's |

The antenna is quite poor and you don't want to be running an amplifier with it because the magmount is small and provides poor coupling to ground. You'd get the same benefits of an amp changing the antenna to a longer one like a Sirio 3000/4000/5000. As Nik said, you're probably going to get more joy sticking it on the boot, Getting a CB to work is easy, shove an antenna on the roof, plug into the cig lighter. Getting it to work well is an entirely different story and the website at www.k0bg.com, although aimed at amateur radio, gives you an idea of just how much needs to be taken into consideration and how much effort needs to be put in to get the best out of a mobile installation. |

Why is that then? It should make no difference unless you've a problem with the antenna installation. |

Hey I'm not 100% sure why, I was told it had something to do with impedance-matching. My friend was working on the Bowman system so I tended to listen to any advice he had. |

It is to do with impedance matching but it only applies when you've a poor RF ground and the coax is forming the RF ground which is not what we want at all. On a well installed antenna the correct length of coax and any patch leads is the shortest to get from A to B. Changing the length of the coax or patch leads should not alter the SWR unless the antenna is one of those compromise ones which uses the coax as part of the antenna (Prowhip for example) or its poorly installed. If it does alter the SWR it also means that the coax is hot with RF. We basically have something capable of giving you RF burns if you touch your gear when TXing and it also means we have RF flying around all over the place where we don't want it. In addition to that it usually means you get a lot of noise on RX you normally shouldn't. Your friend may have been working on the Bowman system but that doesn't mean he knows much about antennas. Most of the military don't because they can just overcome any crappy installs by shoving more power into them. In fact they know so little that the manufacturers of military transceivers basically build them so they're capable of transmitting full whack into a dead short because they know how crap the antenna bolted onto it is likely to be.
