Just getting back into CB and wondering what to buy. Like a lot of people I've got a fairly new car so got all the space problems that go with that. I saw the Uniden 980 on Youtube which was what got me interested again then found out that President does the Grant 2 which is basically a UK version of the Uniden?? But then there's those real mini CBs and the ones which are basically a mic with everything on and a seperate main unit.

Whats the view on the Grant 2? Not interested in freeband rigs as I'm lazy and can't be arsed with all the nonsense using them - the new stuff such as the new Lincoln look a lot more of a headache than my SS3900 was and now we've got legal SSB is there really a need anymore?

Was a lot easier when you used to be able to just screw the rig to the bottom of the dash. :D

Grant 2 is one of the best legal rigs around, if you just intend on using it on legal bands and channels, but not great if you like spinning a VFO it seems a bit clumsy to use like that.

That was my main reason for not wanting something like a Lincoln. Compared to the amateur gear I have they're just not very friendly to use and if I wanted to go down that route I have the option with my TS480.

As I intend to stick with legal CB then its looking like the Grant 2. I've heard a few people say that the FM deviation is low but is it low to the point of being an issue or just quiet compared to those using power mikes and the like? Knights apparently increase the deviation on the ones they sell but I've witnessed them doing it and they do it just by listening to the CB with another radio until it "sounds about right" rather than using a FM deviation meter.

The Uniden 980 is a great little radio for what it is, I use one myself a fair bit but there are a couple of things to remember with it.

1, it only has SSB and AM there is no FM
2, it only operates on the mid band 26.965 to 27.405 so a bit limited on the frequencies it will do

It is compact and lightweight but as mentioned probably not the best option for you.

The Grant 2 does sound like a good choice and many rate it quite highly. Not used one personally though.

As for the deviation it varies not only from radio to radio but also from voice to voice. I have been described as loud and I used to often over deviate when on the FM.
To the point where now I frequently talk into the back of the mic or have it to the side of my mouth instead of turning down the deviation as for everyone else it is fine! Someone else can use the rig and be spot on.

Good luck with your choice, its often not easy with what's available on the market today :thumb:

I have a Grant 2 and I do like it, however it was putting out only 6w PEP on SSB (AM and FM were Ok at 3.8w). The FM deviation was also low even when virtually swallowing the mic and I had to increase it using a deviation meter. I'd not have attempted the tune without the test kit because too many wind the deviation pot up too far and end up sounding like a bag of spanners on air.

They're not all the same, but I've heard enough quiet G2's on the air to know that mine was not a one-off.

Marcus noener I payed for it and a Tuesday at 13.30pm and I had it in my hand at 14.30pm next day the same set in uk was working out over £100 plus I had to buy extension lead and for next day they were going to charge £20 and I have done it before but never arrived next day I bought outside uk and its the same if it has to go back but with one diff if I send mine back he will refund the cost of sending hope you get a good set.73s  :pirate:

Another thumb up for the grant 2. Its a fine well built radio. You may need a little more power than the 12 w on SSB so perhaps budget for a used burner.

A CRT Mike with SSB sounds nice if it ever comes to fruition. I reckon I should be OK with 12W SSB with a decent antenna, I've done Falkland Islands with 50W mobile on 10m and got a vid on Youtube doing India with 21W from a MK1 Lincoln on 10m so when the conditions are favourable it'll probably be OK.
