change your cables around/twist the knobs and move the switches, if you dont get anything off that take it back.

Ok ive just been fiddlin with it,

when transmitting set to FWD and SWR needle doesnt move untill I twist the CAL knob.

It is working correctly then.

To check your VSWR reading, first have the meter switched to SET or FWD/FORWARD. Key the mic on FM and turn the CAL/CALIBRATION knob until it sits at the end of the scale, there may be an indicator at the end with SET or something like that.
Next, switch the meter to REFLECT and key the mic, this will display your VSWR reading, you don't touch the CAL knob on the REF setting. the CAL is to 'set' the meter on the FWD setting.
The scale reading when switched to REF is your VSWR.

I hope you didnt think I was having a dig at cos Steve is a newbie , I was actully stating a fact and making a surgestion , when this forum first started it had sections for new and exsperiance ops to refere to on how to do things but for some reason all of these old sticky info threads have been removed for less important things IMHO which is wrong they should be brought back' but what do I know about running a forum,
Yes I know we were all newbies once I've been about on CB since 1975 and still learning

Glad to see you have got it sussed Steve :)

I agree Martin, it would probably be a good idea to have some 'basic guides' on setting up, SWR, etc.... I have no idea where the old ones went.

It will be, because you have a decent ground plane/counterpoise for the aerial. The aerial is resonant on frequency, it is mononband, so it shouldn't need any mucking about with. You normally only get a SWR problem if there isn't enough metal under the aerial to balance it/form the other half.

By contrast, my antenna, does me from about, 1.9MHz to 52MHz and does need a little bit of fiddling to get it to work across the board, not mobile I hasten to add.
