Mr Ben, no offence but you titled the thread "Point Me In The Right Direction".

So people in the goodness of their heart will click to see what it is all about.

And what do you mean VHF radios?

Old two-way radios - civil or military?

VHF FM broadcast radios?

2m/4m Amateur radios?

I did see once a 2m radio that I think was produced by Garex, which was built from Pye two-way radios. Crystal controlled on the TX and VFO on RX. It was solid state apart from the PA which was a valve, and there was an inverter to provide HT to the anode. I remember as you keyed up, the inverter made a weeeeeeeeeeeeeee noise :D

Hope you find what you are looking for. Have you tried googling vintage valve radios? Practical Wireless also do articles on Valves and Vintage.

The question was so broad I didn't bother.
Are you asking about a specific radio ?
Are you after every valve vhf radio.
Not sure of what constitutes vhf but I normally go 30 MHz to 300 MHz
Thats 6 mtrs, 4 mtrs, 2 mtrs, broadcast band, marine band and everywhere inbetween.
It's like how long is a piece of string.
I'm sure a more precise question will get answers as most don't even know what your asking.

Well, it appears you both pointed out quite fatal issues in my question. My lack of knowledge and wisdom is to blame.

I am after a nice old, 2Meter radio that uses valves. Ideally something that looks like a FT-736R as I love the big old homebase look.

I hope my question is now narrow enough? :)

That does certainly narrows it down a bit :D

I never come across a FT736 looking radio with valves in it. As I understand it (and I could be wrong) commercially available 2m radios usually had a solid state PA, typically outputting 10 watts.

Aww that's a shame, I just love the use of Valve equipment it's a shame I won't be able to find a good old home base unit for 2meters :(

I may settle for a 736R then... I hear they are good?

Yes, the FT736R is very sort after, especially if it has the MuTek front-end added for better reception.

Do any of you know if the Mutek radio is worth more than the normal one? With internal PSU removed also...

I have no idea what a FT736 is worth, but yes it will be added value if it has a Mutek front-end installed. Old timers go mad for that 80's Mutek stuff, as 2m SSB was big back in the day.

Can't comment about the lack of internal PSU.

Apparently the one I'm looking at was used to talk to Cosmonauts INCLUDING THE BRITISH COSMONAUT HELEN SHARMAN ASTRONAUT.

Who ever she is? lol.

They removed the PSU because it made background noise? So it's now 13.8V supplied via an external PSU...

I can't decide whether it's been messed around with a bit much or if the mods done, are normal mods for these radios?
