Hi i've just started getting back into cb radio, me and a few mates had them years ago and had a few good laughs with them, not 100% sure what happened to my old gear but its long gone now. Walking round a boot fair a few months ago I saw an old Harvard 420m with mag mount the man told me it worked well "yeah gets out really well" so I brought it a bargain at £3 got home plugged it in and........... nothing the leads were just sparking I was gutted, but the mag mount was worth £3 so still happy ish. A few weeks later I spotted a midland 3001 and power pack for £5 took it home, the power pack worked and only half the channels from 20 up lol. I ended up buying an Amstrad 900 and mag mount and swr from ebay and gave a friend who lives about a mile away the midland ,we could just about hear each other lol This went on for a while so now I have a stack of half working/non working cbs and swr meters (and still collecting) Finally I think I have a half decent working set up audioline 340, moonraker 30 watt amp, Pr 35 CB Pre Amp and Attenuator, FS Meter & Antenna Matcher 176 ,1/2 wave venom silver rod and 2 power packs. Now I have a question.... what order does it all go in and can it be used together??? I was thinking rig + pre amp + 30watt amp + swr + silver rod with the amp on its own power pack and the rig and pre amp sharing Would this be ok??? Also is there any tips on setting up the silver rod ive had it set up but the mag mount I have seems to be better than the silver rod any help and advice would be a great help Thanks in advance! |

Hi Lee, Welcome to CT DX group. I can issue you the 11m call-sign : 26CT1350, good luck with it. As regards your questions, there are a few factors which would affect the order of your 'chain' of equipment. 'rig + pre amp + 30watt amp + swr + silver rod' : this is probably the usual order, but I cannot find any information on the power handling of your swr meter. If your swr meter will not handle the 30w output of the amplifier, then it would need to be 'swapped' in position with the amplifier, so swr-amp-silver rod. This means you cannot monitor the output of the amplifier. As regards the power supply units, you have not stated the outputs. You will only need a 5amp psu to run the radio and the pre-amp, but I would suggest a 5-7amp psu to run the amplifier, and if you wanted them both to run from one psu, then that psu would ideally need to be a 10-12amp item. Personally, I would not bother with the pre-amp, because in my experience unless you can afford a really good quality one, then it is not worth using a cheaper one. All they tend to do is amplify everything including any background noise, much the same as turning up the RF gain on a radio, you will not hear distant stations any clearer and having it in line will actually introduce losses (albeit small) into your receive. Enjoy the forum, Nik |
