Hi Guys, I want to get a set of PMR for both indoor and our door event work for a charitable organisation and looking at the following choices:

  • Motorola TLK T80 Extreme
  • Midland G9 PMR/LPD
  • Midland G8E BT
  • Midland G8E
  • Intek MT-3030
  • Intek MT-5050

I need for use within buildings for general communications and outdoor for processional and field events.

  • Are the above radio licence free including the LPD radios?
  • What are the range of the above radios (outdoor builded up area and open space?
  • Any other general comments/recommendations?

Your valuable advice would be gratefully received.

James,

Range with PMR is very 'line of sight' - objects in your way can either reflect your signal or absorb it so in a nutshell, how well they function will vary from place to place. From where my house is for example range can be less than a quarter of a mile (quite a lot less in one particular direction), whereas from the top of some of our local hills we could almost be talking face to face from literally miles away.

The best advice I can offer is to completely ignore the quoted range on the packaging!

Hi James, I second Ian's quote ' The best advice I can offer is to completely ignore the quoted range on the packaging!'....

I tend to keep a handie in the car, as were i work on a industrial estate theres a fair bit of activity... I also from time to time pick up the local Motorbike teaching center that does CBT's etc...

I use a ' Oregon Scientific ' model ' TP-329 ' .......... Bought six of these as a set about 8 years ago now, They come with drop in chargers, Very handie, There a really well made little handie, The sound quality is really good..

Second hand prices on Ebay are around £ 20 for a pair... or even less... They have a little push socket on the top for running a hands free kit, I use this when i go out on the Motorbike with my mates, we all have PMR's of various models... The Oregon ones i have have Vox as well , So no need to use a seperate PTT as some of my mates have to..

I used to have a pair of Cobra MT-800's

They were nice solid little sets with good performance for what they were.
