I have just got myself a Baofeng UR-5V for a bit of a play.

I am having issues getting it to connect to the computer. The software seems to be working fine, but my computer is saying there is an issue with the com port. It is saying "This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Not Enough Quota} Not enough virtual memory or paging file quota is available to complete the specified operation."

I am running Windows 8.1 and have tried both Baofeng software and Chirp.

Has anyone else had this issue and what did you do to sort it?

Simon, I programmed one once! My solution was to use a computer with Windows XP as soon as I went onto that machine it worked straight away.

I'm sure someone will be able to provide a better answer but I have heard of many issues when using more modern operating systems for the UV-5r

Up until a couple of weeks ago I did have a netbook running windows 7 but it got dropped and is now not working.

Maybe the issue is my lead? I have heard a rumour that some don't work as well as others.

I think it is down to the lead.

The Software is working fine but the computer won't run the COM port correctly.

It is a fake lead and I have heard that they often cause issues with newer operating systems.

I haven't got a chirp bootdisc, as I downloaded Chirp from the web.

You could run a Linux on Virtualbox or VMWare Player. Linux is much more stable dealing with COM ports (and most other things!). The Baofeng USB to RS232 bridge works out the box in Ubuntu. If you are interested in this route, I can help if you need. I have a ready built working Ubunutu / CHIRP VMWare machine I could copy for you. If you are not familiar with virtual machines, all this means is we can run a Linux OS on top of your Windows installation. It sounds a bit involved but it's really quite easy to setup and use.

Windows 8 is the problem, it appears that many win 8 users are having the same issues with this software.

You can get the bootdisc from here so long as you configure the computer to look for boot cd/dvd 1st it will load let you play then when you reboot without the disc in your back to windows.

Right, just to update.

I have got hold of a genuine lead and the COM ports are now working correctly.

The radio however is not responding when I try to connect to it.

Is there anything in the radio menu that I need to change to get it to connect?
