No mate you cant , when I had one I used to be able to to just about pick up Stansted Airport Ground Control talking to the planes on the ground but that was just a oneway conversation as I couldnt hear the planes and anyway once the planes take off they change frequencys that the Baofeng cant get , unless someone know better but all of my mates who have owed them they it was the same

Planes us AM modulation, where as I think the Baofengs can only receive FM.

Secondhand scanners are cheap these days. ;)

You can extend the frequency of a Baofeng to cover some of the air band but as already been mentioned it's a waste of time as airband is AM and the Baofeng is FM only.

Better stick to marine band

If you have a look around James, you can pick up scanners for the airband for reasonable money.

I recently bought a 'Netset pro-44' handheld scanner for £25 second-hand. That covers all of the airband no problem.

Have a word with Douglas at Knights Electrocom, they have used scanners capable of both military and civil airband reception. Airband uses 8.33khz steps so try to get one with that option. I use a Yaesu VR500 for airband monitoring and although it doesn't have 8.33khz steps using direct frequency input works ok. As I said, Google Knights Electrocom and he will advise you accordingly (and he's a nice chap too)

The last time I listened to airband it was on an old Netset 2032 scanner.

It picked up really well even on the set top antenna, I could hear the planes from Nearby RAF Brize Norton.
