Hi, I have the 351, am located in Suffolk, I call and monitor 70.450 daily when I can. I have an RFD up at about 25feet outside, so get a good range, around 20miles in normal conditions.

Hi Andy, as a 4m radio-aficionado ;) I wish you the best on 70 MHz :)

Pardon my ignorance, what's a RFD?

http://www.n5ese.com/rfd.htm shows it better than I can explain it. Just make you're measurements for 4m, use rg58 cable and I use a choke balun rather than toroidal choke. I also have a portable RFD use that I hang up trees, put an extension feeder on it and it woks really well. Simple cheap and easy, my favourites. For the clansman! you could make a 6m RFD as well, as it covers both bands, but if there are only one or two ops on 4, I never hear anyone on 6!!

Ahh, see what you mean now. I know that configuration under another name :)

My next project is a manpack. I have a ye olde metal framed backpack, and going to mount a FT817 and a Wouxun 4m/2m handie inside, both connected to a 7Ah battery and solar panel. Then adding a SO239 antenna mount* to the frame, which will provide a groundplane.

Going to have a :coffee: and start on it this arvo :)

*Have various commercial and homebrew antennas to screw on

Keep updating, activity breeds activity. I try and push 4m of any type around here to anyone who listens. Went to a rally today and saw someone selling some tait gear. If it had been me I'd have had a rig on and someone calling in from away to demonstrate. I was 4m /m calling all the way on a 1 and a quarter hour journey, to a radio rally, and not a peep. Mind you, other freqs were equally dead!! With the plethora of handies being waved around, you'd think you'd get a reply to a call. But no. Lots of licensed listeners out there.
Anyway, got me some new plugs and waterproof speakers, so I'm really pleased.

Got to keep promoting 4m, but not make it religious as Selim M0XTA on the 70mhz.org forum, lol :D

Manpack is practically done. Has a SO239 mount and I've tested it with a telescopic 1/4 wave whip that I have Araldited into a PL259 for 4 and 2 metres. Didn't use the FT817 at the end, but installed a Cybernet Barracuda CB radio instead. Going to use a two section 1/4w whip for 11 metres.

When it's operational, I will stick some pictures up :)

Gru, please. I know that look all too well. It is the look of a broken heart. I, too, have spent many nights, trying to drown my sorrows in guacamole. But we are survivors. There's much more to us than meets the eye, hm?

Had a nice qso with M0JVM yesterday, 35km distance. I started on the Simoco, then switched to the 351, turned on the amp and we had a cracking 45min contact as he tested various headsets, handsets and power settings. He was on a 353 btw, with up to 50w output. WEre both running the Sirio 3/4wave antennas at approx the same height. We're both in open farmland, with a good take off. I was interested in how e tone squelch opened up, even when he dropped the power. A good day on the green machines :thumb:

Well, persistent calling on 70.450 bagged me a couple of contacts, one 47km away. It's surprising how many pop up now and again to have a listen.

Had a shout on 51.700 last night, bagged another contact. If you're in the Suffolk or just above the border in Norfolk shout/listen on 70.450, I call frequently and listen all the time I'm in the shack.

4m/70mhz in mid-Anglia is getting livelier, and inter-G is picking up. I now have an end-fed dipole at 37feet, and a 4ele OWL yagi at 33feet with a rotator. 20w will get me up to average 100miles (ish) and I have wkd Norway /m all on FM, nothing special other than a well-sited antenna and persistence. There are cynics out there who say that there's nobody on 4, they generally site the antenna on a biscuit tin in the corner of the loft. I hear many of them calling but they can't hear replies, from any where. I acted as link yesterday for three stations 5miles from each other, and I'm about 20miles away! Radios are cheap and available, IMO 4m works better than 2, although the antennas are larger than 2m and of course, no repeaters....heaven!

Absolutely Andy, some the antenna configurations used on 4m isn't going to give the band any justice.

Unfortunately need no DX. Longest contact from Dartmoor to Taunton. Never on at the right time at the place.

But still regularly use it locally mobile and get good range without repeaters ;)

Had dx from S Devon coming up the other week, possibly ducting at a guess. Pixie, did I hear you calling thru the NY repeater on 10m a couple of days ago? I couldn't remember the call but someone from Cornwall was calling, but conditions faded and I lost the repeater

Could of been me. I was on it yesterday afternoon, and I know Brian G4KAW was on it very recently and he lives about 10 miles away from me.

Forgot to say, improvements at this qth, 4m RFD now at 37feet to the base, on top of an old ww11 antenna pole, which is on top of a scaffold pole, then for directional power, I have a 4ele OWL. Yagi at 10m. To date have worked across to the Peak District, down to London, up to Doncaster and across to a /m in Norway. All on 20w, on FM. Worked a /m as he crossed the county on .450, he was on 10w output with 1/4wave on the boot lid, I tracked his journey on the beam, worked a treat. He was surprised, and it was pleased that my investment paid off.

I do have a book somewhere (must find it) that has a design for a 29/50/70/145 MHz antenna based on the G5RV. Off the top of my head each leg is about 2.5m in length with a 300 :ohm: ladder line and then a low impedance line to an ATU.

Because of it's size, it can be configured vertically or horizontally.

Just found the book: Backyard Antennas by Peter Dodd G3LDO

It's the G4LQI Multi-Band Vertical for 29/70/50 not 145. Based on the G5RV design.

Each leg is 2.4m in length.

The feeder is 4.76m long open line (described as 1mm dia wire with a spacing of 25mm).

This then is connected to the coax (75 :ohm: ) via a choke balun (three 8cm diameter turns of coax).

SWR was lowest on 1.6:1 on 29.3MHz; 50MHz band 2.8:1; 70MHz band 2.3:1.
