Since I returned to the UK from Tenerife last July following 'er indoors passing away I have been staying with my sister..I am now moving into my own place in a couple of weeks after a spot of decorating..ya know splash of paint here and there and a general sort out.. I can now get a decent set of antennas..any thoughts on a reasonable antenna..(homebase) for 2metre band to use with my FT 736...I was thinking of a Watson or a Diamond..your input is appreciated.. |

What do you want to do with it? Are you thinking Yagi or colinear? Personally I have always stuck with a colinear since I cannot be bothered getting involved with rotators etc. From there it depends how much you want to spend, a Diamond X30 is a resonable priced budget antenna at about £50, but you can spend as much as you want and get longer and longer antenna's with supposed increases in gain as a result. |

Colinear I reckon Darren. Like you rotators are a bit of a mess about. And a colinear dual band job 2m/70cm should do the trick..and I have around 60 quid..gonna have a look round Blackpool rally this Sunday see if I can bag a decent cheapie...

Like I say I have a Diamond X-30 that I bought from Lamco. BUT, be careful when looking. Diamond are expensive. If you look at D-Original they are essentially the same antenna, but without the same cost. |

my advice would be a diamond x50! DONT go for cheap!!! there is a reason its cheap! i have used the sharmans and the moonraker etc! its all crap! i have had 3 diamond antennas and there all brilliant! the x300 2m 70 cms and 446 with a swr of below 1.5-1 changed to a v2000 diamond tribander and then for a mate of mine the x50!! best value for money ? the diamond x50!! dual band great swr on 2m 70cms and 446 and if you buy from radiozing on ebay delivered for less than £60 !!!! ive bought a few from them and the perform better than the v2000 diamond and leve the cheap makes in the dust!!! my diamond has been up for 12 years and still as good as the day it was installed! |

Even so Kevin, the D Original and the Diamonds do appear to be exactly the same, only except the packaging is green or yellow respectively. |

Just remember that to get the best out of SSB at VHF/UHF you will need horizontal polarisation. However a vertical will work after a fashion but remember there will be a 20dB difference (100 times 1/100th. 3-4 "S" points difference) I'll give examples from me doing the Tuesday night VHF contests from just South of Lincoln Mobile whip furthest was Buxton Halo (2 metre dipole bent round to give omni coverage) Just got into Northern Ireland Cloverleaf (Wimo "Big Wheel" 3 full wave loops possibly best omni) Into Northern Ireland regular. The radio is the Yaesu FT817 (5 watts) Also don't shortchange on the coax |

The coax is a very good point. Lamco steered me towards Westflex 103, with RG213 as the absolute minimum for VHF/UHF |

Absolutely right Daz. Westflex gives best bang for your buck especially at UHF. RG58 is only useful for patch leads, nothing else!! |
