DMR/Mototrbo Question

I have just been reading last months Practical Wireless magazine, and it has raised a question with regard to DMR and the Motorola Mototrbo system.

I have always said that I was not interested in buying a radio for this system, despite our having a local repeater in Huddersfield for it. My reason for saying this was that the way I saw it I would be paying a good deal of money out for a radio specific to a system, which if the repeater was turned off would tehn be pretty much useless, and therefore worthless.

But, the recent article suggests that Yaesu have now brought out a DMR capable rig. I assume this is the new DTM400 radio, which also does analogue. Can anyone confirm if this is indeed DMR capable? If it is it makes the prospect of DMR more interesting.

Pretty sure the FTM-400DR is not DMR. It has a digital mode which is C4FM FDMA. DMR is a TDMA system.

There a quite a few digital voice standards floating around: D-STAR is the ham radio one, DMR seems now to be the main commercial / business use mode & there's quite a few ham repeaters now also using DMR. Then I think there's a few other digital modes, P25, digital PMR446 etc.

None of them is compatible with the others!

The advantage with DMR radios is most work on analogue FM also, so a UHF model could be programmed for 432MHz, 446MHz :pirate: (analogue) and DMR.

Thanks Ian.

That puts me off the Yaesu then.

As I said in my original post, I was put off the Mototrbo system because I saw it as a DMR only radio which would only be useful whilstever the local repeater was up and working.
