Test frequencies?; New Baofeng, can't hear a thing

So the baofeng arrived today and it doesn't seem to be picking anything up at all.

I have tried the pmr channels, set it to wide (and narrow) and used 6.25khz step and not a thing.

Had the radio scanning through the frequencies using different steps and occasionally it will stop and show some evidence of reception re illuminated but all I hear is static or some weird modulation type noises but even they seem to be hit and miss.

I am heading off for a clear line of sight high ground later to see what if anything I can pick up.

In the meantime, was wondering if there are any frequencies you guys know off that I could go to specifically and see if I can rx them?

I am using a nagoya na771 and investigated my local repeater but apparently it is down according to the info I received it has been turned off since january this year. (Found another page saying it is operational, but on the map coverage I am indeed in the one place locally where there is no coverage...so I suspect that will apply for other radio activity too?

All I wanna do is listen to some chatter lol

I am circa 600 foot ASL at home but topographically speaking am in a very shallow dip so am aware that my location may just be complete pants

Ahh sorry, thought I covered everything, bound to miss something.

Its the baofeng uv 5ra, the repeater is this one...
http://www.ukrepeater.net/repeaters/maps/gb3ma.jpg

I'm in wardle between littleborough and whitworth right on the edge of the boundary of reception but doesn't look good for wardle

but having checked the map it looks like I am in a blank spot :( I will drive close to the repeater tonight and see if I can get it.

If I am out of bounds for the repeater, will that be likely explanation for other reception?

I think a mobile cb will be next up

You would do better to see if anyone near has a dat file you could flash to it tbh.Remember the time it takes to scan through 136-174/400-520MHz takes a fair time.some transmissions are only very short and you may just miss them.Hope you get better results out and about m8.........................

I tried the Nagoya NA771 on my original UV5R and found it didn't increase performance a huge amount. The UV5R also isn't exceptionally sensitive on 446. A 446 handie will actually hear weak stations the UV5R misses completely.

I've found a dipole does a great job improving the UV5R's performance at home. I've put a 2m dipole in the loft made with old twin and earth cable and have managed 15mile+ contacts when a couple of miles is a struggle from my QTH with the stock whip. The UV5R will come to life on high ground though!

Ive actually read that today about bog standard 446 radios...they just focus on 446 so tend to be a lot better ...from what I read and you just backed it up.

Oh that is cool, I had intended making a t2lt for a cb when I get one haven't investigated whether you can do the same with the baofeng, excellent stuff I will definitely have a mess about with that then, will be great to get messing about homebrewing antenna.

Thanks for the pointer mate!

I think the info about GB3MA being off air is correct. When I have been to Manchester I have no managed to make it into that box.

You could look up the frequencies for GB3YW. Forget about putting in the CTCSS tone if you are only listening and you might just pick up the Llandudno repeater, which is on the same frequency, but with different tones. I know I can get the Llandudno box on receive in the car all the way to the top of the pennines (with a few bad spots in between), where I then hear the Huddersfield box, with the occasional interlude from Wales.

Alternatively you could look at the 70cms repeaters.
