Decided to take a trip up my local hill (175mts asl) on Sunday to try out the Baofend uv-5rc plus new antenna and also a small argos cheapie and see if I could make any contacts locally on pmr446. Whilst cursing profusely at my lack of preperation for the weather, blowing a gale and raining just ten minutes after arriving there, I find that 7 out of 8 channels are being used by I presume motorcycle training schools doing compulsary basic training or similar and channel 1 by screaming kids. There was the odd conversation trying to break through on channel 8 but I think they gave up. I really didn't want to disturb the motorcycle training but it was annoying to say the least.Am I being too polite and respectful or should I just say to it and carry on regardless?Paul |

Whilst it's nice to be polite, if u wait for all those motorcycle operators to shut up you'll never get to speak to anyone! Anyone can use pmr446 but I think that businesses should use licenced business radios and not use cb/446 which are meant to be for recreational use. You have the advantage of height so just shout over the top of them! |

Plus if they've any gumption about themselves they'll have CTCSS enabled so won't actually hear you anyway. |

I'm a bit shocked at the other 2 replys. I would never transmit over someone who was already on a frequency as I wouldn't be happy if someone talked over me ctcss or not. It's just plain bad manners. I can understand the frustration but if it's ok to talk over them then it's ok anywhere, it's the mentality of the european rabble for rare stations and the reason I gave up fm sat working and rarely use voice anymore. It depends or your morals but I think you did the right thing not calling over them. |

I agree with Richard on this one but i must say that ive had the very same thing with motorcycle training schools using pmr 8, ive broke in on the there training and asked if they could move freq and explained very politly that radio users tend to use pmr 8 for long distance contacts. they were quite happy to move ;-) |

But the pupil isn't going to hear you above the instructor a few yards behind you even if they don't have CTCSS on. and with it on they won't have a clue you're there anyway. Edited by Observer, Tuesday, 18. March 2014, 17:19.

Thanks for your input fellas and like most things there are evidently two sides to a coin. I can see that in one hand there are only 8 channels to fight over with the thousands of other pmr users and as it is free for everyone to use we should be able to just shout out but I can also see what the other chaps above are saying about good manners, etiquette etc. As my real aim is to dx with the pmr (using my ct call sign) and trying to make contact with some other ct members here up north I think I will stay polite. Paul. |

It is naughty for pmr freqs but a yagi for those freqs is very small and you could use it to lose the other people by putting them on the side of it. |
