Hi Kevin, I think most people use ch8, it seems to be the most popular. I know the Sunday DX runs on there and I use ch8 when out as do most of the CTX crew. Of late it has been very quiet in terms of DX and full of business use and kids messing about so many people have gone away from it. For the most part ch8 is the calling channel although not strictly used as that and many people will use it for a chat. During the week I can here 4-5 stations when up on Salisbury plain from Hampshire to Wales but it can be a bit hit and a miss! I find it is a case of monitoring the 1-8 and calling when you can. Also its very line of sight so getting to high ground is a must. |

I also Monitor ch 8 no ctcss... theres some activity but not a lot... Im up at 1200 ft with a external antenna... But the qth is in a bit of a bowl. Most of the mountains either side tower up to over 1600 ft :-( This Summer i plan on using it from the local mountain top and seeing what it can really do... Mark |

I’m in Norwich and have one set on scan 1 to 8 - no ctcss, I’ve heard no one calling on it or any dx - only business use (it’s amazing how many people take jewellery back to Argos... or maybe not...). The lack of contacts is not surprising as I’m only 3m asl :-( and right in the middle of the city. no external antenna I did buy them as a bit of fun when we all go climbing in the peak district so will be taking them this Easter and will be monitoring from the top of various crags when not climbing or falling off them. |

Am on Channel 8 every weekday from 8:15-9:30, 17:00-18:20 and randomly through the weekend !Out and about in the Telford area commuting ! Although I would love to set up a repeater if i know how and how much it would cost. I have only made one DX in the last 3 months sadly, although the local dinner laddies at a near by school are on every luch time. ATB Matt |

I have a hard time putting 446 and DX into the same sentence however, I also monitor CH8 and to date have heard nothing from home but out on the hills the traffic does pick up. Children (it's only to be expected) and a few farms use them around my localish high spot. |

I'm often monitoring ch8 and once in a blue moon do get a contact. Never have high expectations with PMR, to avoid disappointment

Curious to know why? Is it because of the short distances usually involved, although 60/70/80 miles plus is easy enough from high ground. |

Last time I used PMR there was some tropo running, and from the north coast of Cornwall had contacts into south Wales and Lundy Island. I think that constitutes as DX. Having said that, I have to chuckle at the 446 Muppets International DX Group. No offence if any of their members are reading this but "446" and "International DX" does make for an interesting title I hasten to add that international may mean members from other countries rather than very long distant contacts ![]() Any case, is DX the be all and end all of the radio hobby? The net on 27Mhz CB was particularly busy that day, so didn't get a chance to spend much time on 446, so it'd be good to try 446 again Dave - the distances I was getting that day were pretty much the norm and Lundy was excellent for 446 when I was there, so not sure if we had a lift on or not. Garreg Lwyd in South Wales does seem a particularly good spot for Devon and Cornwall ![]() I take 446 as a bit of fun and as a backup to the CB, but it can throw up a few superb contacts from time to time ![]() |

Definitely a tropospheric lift on UHF that day Gary. No doubt in my mind. This is good opportunity to mention that I will be working at Glastonbury Festival at the end of June. I will be monitoring ch8 in between fun and work

My comment was ment to be lite hearted That said I wonder how many who work 'DX' are using the very cheap, 8CH, PMR radios and not a, for example, a Baofeng handheld running 4/5 watts through a high gain antenna? but that is not the point of this thread.....

No worries Bob! Its hard to say regarding the radio in question. I know Gary 104 has done 89 miles on a std pmr, I have done about 40 so its possible. Needs some good high ground to high ground stations! As you say another story and better not hijack the thread or I might get my knuckles wrapped

I monitor CH5 & CH8 but often scan through all the channels. The guys in Northumberland use CH5 as a local Net. |
