Staying on the Lindsey Buckingham theme, I have just started to try and learn how to play 'never going back again', one of my favourite Fleetwood Mac tunes, from their best (in my opinion) album, Rumours. It sounds quite simple, but oh my gosh, it is a real challenge to get the fingerpicking correct. |

With a week off work, it's given me time to practice guitar for a few hours a day. I wonder how many hours a day I'd need to play, in order to get as good as Tommy Emmanuel, maybe 480 hours a day ??? And my level of playing - yes it's me, (DON'T LAUGH !!!) - |

Sitting here on this bank holiday Monday, after the light rain had stopped, and the sun was just starting to creep out from behind the grey blanket, I put this on to listen. Why can't anyone write beautiful simple innocent songs like this anymore ? |

I quite like that Raz & Maria tune Sam, but I'm not that impressed with the overall production/sound, which is typical of 'modern' trance especially. It sounds extremely over-compressed, and there is no dynamics to the track, ie no soft/quiet bits or powerful/loud bits. Every part of the track is so overly compressed and pushed to maximum that it (like all modern music really) has lost it's dynamic. In trance tunes from 97-99 the quiet bits were almost silent, which made the loud bits seem REALLY F'KIN LOUD lolol, and then the drops/builds etc were really quiet again and more effective. These days, all dance music seems to be simply a loudness war between producers, and everybody's tracks are just on a level from start to finish with no let-up in the relentless pursuit of the ultimate loudness. My favourite trance years are 97 to 2003 when I thought the whole scene was on fire. To be honest, I think every genre of dance music has about 5 good years, before it's done to death. For trance, there's only so much you can do with a super-saw waveform (almost every lead synth in trance uses this). One of the last 'great' trance tunes I think was Rusch & Murray's - Epic, especially the above & beyond remix. It had that roller-coaster ride to the dynamics, and also didn't need any words either, the tune alone was just bliss. |

Hi. Guys. I'm into 70s /80s prog. rock. i.e. Floyd / Yes / Hawkwind / Led Zep / Vangelis / Kraftwerk etc. any group with a Synth or organ. I still like the oldies Buddy H. / Beach boys / Billy F. / Simon & G. like martin likes, But after the late 80s. to me music lost it's way. 73s Mike. |

Hi Mike, I am like Sam, I literally like allsorts, and even though I was a DJ at raves, I also play acoustic guitar ![]() I love a bit of 70's prog, but more folky than you, so stuff like pentangle, traffic, caravan, etc. Also love crosby stills & nash stuff too, simon & Garfunkel too... The first music I went mad for, was the 2 tone 'ska revival' stuff from 79-81, specials, bad manners, the beat, selector, etc. Then I was a breakdancer 82-86 so I love old school hiphop, and electro. I really love brand new UK HipHop as well, some great stuff coming out, and it is very much underground, not in the least commercial, nobody has heard of any of the stuff I buy lol ! I got into acid house in 88, and then the rave scene in 90 - 93, got back into house music for a bit and then trance, although I did like jungle too hahha. I think there is plenty of great music out there being made, but you have to really dig for it, amongst the piles of commercial shyte. It's so easy for anyone with a computer these days, to make tunes (even I can lolol), that there is just so much music around, and the quality is very much diluted. |
