what handhelds would be the best I am talking with standard antenna would i gain any more distance in going for low band vhf (66-88mhz) over standard mid/hi band (136-174mhz)

I have been looking at the 4m version of the KG-818 LOW BAND http://myverdict.net/?p=1979 but seeing as it has not even got a 1/4 wave length antenna would i gain any more distance over a 136-174 vhf versions of the wouxon kg-818

I Was thinking of using the uk simple light channels in the low band as i know 4m is better around hilly terrain like where i live but not sure what is was like on a shorter antenna,

Uk simple light 5w channels

I run a 4m handy. Bin the stock rubber duck. Make up an RFD, (Resonant feedline dipole) and get it up a tree or somewhere high. I find it outperforms 2m like for like, the only thing 2m wins on is the repeaters, oh and there is a higher chance of a contact on 2 as there aren't so many on 4m, also 2m antennas can have far more gain for their size than 4m ones. But I do like 4m and try to encourage its use, it's a good little band, and the signal isn't quite so terrain dependent.
