its best to have a call rather than use your name, lets just say your name is bill and i call bill can you copy i might get 10 or more bills calling back to me as for the range nobody can say as it can change every day, you might only get 10 miles one day but the next you could get any location on the map. |

Hi Daryl, The CT call-signs are based on the same system as used by most of the other DX groups (and initially designated by the Alpha Tango group). All call-signs are three parts. Part one is a 1, 2, or 3 digit number which specifies which country you are from. Part two is a combination of letters which specifies your dx group. Part three is another number which indicates your membership number in that particular group. There are some exceptions, like for example when an operator is calling from a different country (or 'division' as its called) for a short time (maybe they are travelling, or on holiday), in which case the usual call-sign is preceeded with the current division location number and a forward-slash to separate this from the rest of the call-sign. These call-signs are primarily used on the 11m band. This link is a list of all the divisions, and the numbers used : http://s3.zetaboards.com/copythat/pages/11md2c/ For example, my call-sign, 26CT573 means I am from 26 division (England), I am a member of the CT (Charlie tango) dx group, and I am member number 573. Call-signs are used for many reasons, I think initially it was probably a form of identification which kept your real identity a secret when transmitting on illegal frequencies (my own theory, not necessarily the opinion of other members). Hope this explains things

I love your profile pic Nik! Do I need a call sign for standard cb use then? Hopefully will be set up soon. Just need to sort some sort of power to the unit then ready to roll! That's when ill find out if its a hive of activity or I'm a liner riding the waves alone! |

For normal local FM legal communications, a call-sign is not that important, as most uk fm users use handles, or simply 1st names nowadays. But, lets consider you are talking to a local friend, and there is some good propagation (conditions which allow your signal to bounce off a layer of the atmosphere and travel much further, and another station from (lets say) france hears you and calls back to you. By using a call-sign, they can immediately know you are from England, and which dx group you are a member of, and your number. They could search for the CT site and maybe try to contact you here, to get an email address maybe, to exchange qsl cards. If you would like a call-sign, just post a request in the 'introductions and call-sign requests' area. You can have a callsign and a ct callsign, I use scruff on cb and 26cd839 if i'm talking dx. If i'm on the cept channels I use 26ct839 as i'm normally looking to talk a bit further away and trying to explain scruff to an italian is to much like hard work. ct callsigns are issued when asked for it's not like you are forced to use it but you may find that people will answer it more readily than a handle. If I know someone then I just use my name. I just checked and 2006 is not allocated so if you ask they will allocate you ct2006 which is close to your handle. just my twopenny worth. Hey Daryl and welcome to CT. Don't be disheartened, it DOES seem rather a lot of complicated info to digest all at once but trust me you will pick up most of what you need in no time. Once you get your first contact you will be hooked and looking for more and more info, tips and tricks to further your new hobby. Have a good scran through the sections on the forum, you'll be surprised how it all comes together. If unsure of anything just pop a question. Great bunch on here so you're in good hands ![]() Good Luck

The best way is to listen, when they go to receive after signing off with a contact, drop your callsign in. If they hear you, you're in! A few "Q" codes that you will hear. ("Q" codes are procedural codes first used on Morse Code) CQ = Seek You aka I'm seeking a contact QSY = Change frequency to ... QRT = I'm pulling the big switch, closing down QRX = Stand by QRO = POWER!!! QRP = Low power, usually 5 watts or less QSK = "Break", This is rarely used on Amateur Radio on voice. On CB it's to let people know you want to join the conversation QSO = Contact, as in "In QSO with..." conversation on the air As said earlier DX means Distance also rarity value eg Germany on the Ham 20 metre band is hardly DX but Andorra is |
