I was just thinking to myself that it really would be helpful and convenient if someone could produce something like the Chinese Baofeng UV5R radios that do 27AM/27FM /PMR446 the way they do with the 2m /70cm /pmr446 UV5Rs??

Does anyone think the Chinese may come up with such a device??

That would be useful :D

But whether such a frequency coverage come out of China I won't be holding my breath. There are various reasons, first is the volume of sales and mass production. Second is for technical reasons. It is harder to miniaturise the 27 MHz tuned circuits at a high enough performance to be a proper bit of communications equipment. Then there is the PLL, microprocessor circuitry and firmware. You would all kinds of technical issues with a wideband TX, though the FT817 does it OK but has banks of RF filters, but that takes up more room internally. If going by some of the Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu wideband receivers on their handies, it will overload badly. Then there is the antenna issue. Several antennas or one that does it all rubber duck that will be useless. Also a 27 & 446MHz dual-bander may not conform to regulation standards (but don't quote me on that).

Would be easier to glue a cheap PMR onto the back of a CB handie or its battery pack, lol :D

There's no technical reason why it can't be done, but the market for 27MHz handhelds is pretty small and I doubt it would be worth the startup costs. There's also the problem of coming up with an antenna that works reasonably well on 11m, 2m and 70cm and is still short enough for a HT (the Diamond CR-8900, as an example, is over 4 feet long and £90).

If you're looking for a mobile (in-car) rig , well then your luck is in. There's the quad-band Wouxun KG-UV950P for £260. You still have the problem of coming up with a suitable antenna but at least a long whip makes a bit more sense on a vehicle!

(There's a similar Yaesu, the FT-8900, which costs a bit more and doesn't do 11m out of the box.)

Very tempted to purchase one of those Wouxun quads. Like you say though, tricky to get a decent performing antenna, at a reasonable price.

Although I wouldn't buy anything from that seller, given the very poor feedback score :(

It is possible to build a CB/PMR dual band mobile antenna. I have built CB/2m (27/145 MHz) dual bander once out of bits of CB antennas and later I found out that Sirio make one Click for LINK

It would be the similar process with PMR. The bottom section would be a 5/8 wave at 446 MHz with a small matching coil (about 4 turns) at the base. Make sure that the SWR is low on 446.

Then on top of the bottom section you add a CB centre-loading coil (like from an old Modulator T-Bolt) and a whip on top adjusted for lowest SWR on CB. This shouldn't effect the SWR on PMR446.

How does it work? Because the CB 27 MHz loading coil at 446 MHz acts as a RF choke (high inductive reactance) preventing the rest of the antenna to work at 446 MHz, but at 27 MHz stills see it as a loading coil.

Just chucking an idea out if anyone would like to give it a go. My CB/2m antenna worked fine.

Just remember that you have import charges to pay if you buy on of these Chinese rigs even when they say free postage.
