While reading another thread on this group I was surprised to see someone mention a CB club. (Ayrwaves in Ayrshire) I had assumed that the good old fashioned CB radio club was extinct and no longer to be found within British shores. In the 1980s I was in clubs whose numbers were well into three figures. Even in the 90s there were a few clubs. I am referring to local CB clubs. Not SSB DX clubs. Not amateur radio clubs with a CB branch. But clubs which were mainly legal FM and served the local non-technical CBing community. So the good ol'e CB club is not extinct, but I fear it is an endangered species. How about using this thread to list the clubs that are still clubbing? Anyone know what happend to the Solway Pirates and the Southerness eyeball? I'd be curious to hear about their demise. Sad tale though it may be. |

Indeed they are Dave. Or at least this one is as it lists members, issues callsigns, promotes club activities etc. Damn good idea I reckon. More power to them. But the fact that the esteemed overlords of this forum saw a need for such a club, shows that CB is attracting so few enthusiasts these days that clubs are required to seek a national membership base, or in my case international. Clubs as we knew them in the 1980s are no longer. In the mid 80s I was in clubs in two towns. The membership numbers were approx 1% of the population of the towns. Are there any local clubs still in existance? |

I think its true to say the PC and mobile phone killed cb radio, also the clubs that went with the hobby, looking on line at cb - ham radio forums that serve a purpose you could count them on one hand ! even when i applied to join international dx forums =clubs either no reply or months to reply and by then ive fogotten that i filled an application online to join so didnt bother i had lost interest, there isnt any inter county eyeballs..meets like there used to be where several clubs did a meet in a mutual location perhaps on a bank holiday and they were good..last one i went to was in 1999 ! ,

The Homesteaders people around here hold two actual meetings per year which often attract 30-40 people - although not a club as such (it's a meeting of those who participate in their net on Wednesday afternoons), it goes to show that CB can still bring people together just like the old days |

Good to hear about that Gary. But I take the lack of posts indicated a lack of club activity generally. Not a surprise. Bad sad when we think of what used to be. Maybe CT should have a club meeting. If I was near I'd go ![]() |
